Morning chaps, can anyone recommend which is the best engine oil for the 8V K100
Last time I used 20/50, but my other 2 classic bikes seem to run cooler using 10/60 fully synthetic.
Anyone offer guidance ?
I did a search to no avail. M

Do you race it? Do you think that you horse it on ?? e'g' frequent redlines??

Just stick clean and fresh of the appropriate volume in it and change it ever 6000 as pr BM recommendations, One thing I am "Anal" about is Oil filters It amazes me when People would try to save a fiver on an oil filter! The OE is Mahle and the K uses an OC91D kit, this will get you the Alloy crush washers for all the oils, but you may/will need the Big O ring on the oil filter access panel Size 88X3 Part ~ 11131460425 (Dislike HiFlo, K&N and Champion intensely! Mostly Hi flo and K & N !!! )

People often just LOOK for problems! Better to check Service history! If you do not know it?

Then Service it with decent new oil, coolant, Brake fluid and filters Check the cooling fan is not "Stuck" and the clutch pivot arm moves freely! Tyre Age and Condition and Brake hose condition (Definitely change them if OE !!!!)

And keep an eye on fluid levels and etc etc than worry about "What Oil!"

as a note "Fully synth" can cause leakage at seals when the bike was never designed for it!!

Not saying that It will happen but I have been called quite a few times over the years

"I changed the oil in my Rxxx or my Kxxx and its dripping oil

How long ago??? Answers ranged from 50 miles to a Few Hundred miles

Always the same What oil did you use? Answers Brand X fully synth

My Reply get it hot drain the oil and put 20W50 dinosaur oil back in it Personally I'd change the filter or wash it in petrol Your call

Usually I had to phone back a week or two later !! How is it now??? Oh Aye its fine I changed the oil back to 20~50 and filter

Always amazes me how folks ask for help but never tell you that it sorted their problem :blast:blast:blast

Thanks for your reply, I always do the filters as well, usually at 5 to 6K intervals and don't do short journeys, and I don't rag it anyway. M

IN that case 20W50 Dino Oil will be just fine

Also the correct coolant rather than just water and they take forever to "Burp" if you drain them!! Because of the tiny coolant holes in the headgasket

Yes oil filters - I've seen lots of bikes with Hyperpro oil filters recently, they are cheap and plentiful on eBay, therefore my assumption is that they
are of doubtful / unknown quality.
Why, when Mahle / Mann are top quality and readily available; not the cheapest but cheaper than genuine BMW and just as good.

Mahle make them for BMW (Or Did Also Knecht )

I despise Hi Flo the only filters to ever give bother getting off after some fool "saved money!" by doing their own service and tightening the fuckers up with a 3 foot Stillson wrench! Which when you do that You have to cut them and tack weld something onto them!! because the outer shell breaks loose from the base!!

Spinny Spinny No Loosey Loosey!!

Yes sorry I mean Hi-Flo (no intention to discredit Hyperpro excellent suspension), God knows where they come from - well China at a guess.
