So picked up an old 1997, R80 gs basic yesterday.
German import with all paperwork.
It's been pillaged for parts over the years but sat in the dark for about 13 unused so I'm to belive.
It's got some nice parts with it and is telling me to build a special this time round.
Is this a good thing ? Or do I try and find some original bits and put it back to a standard bike?
Decisions Decisions.......

I’d rebuild it as it currently is. It looks like it’ll be a really nice bike. The subframe is very nice

I see some problems ahead but a special is your best option IMO

Depends if you want it for yourself or at some point it’s going to be sold.
Back to standard will give it more value and will be a lot easier to sell.
If you want to build a special ,any old dog eared paralever GS will do.
That said,if the bike was cheap enough I guess it makes no odds😀

Have you seen the cost of Basic fuel tanks, not to mention the Kalahari ones; But I have seen good reports of the copies made in India, although still pricey.

If it’s for resale, then better as a standard basic…..but costly to source all correct parts.

If it’s to keep, then build whatever suits you, and how you wish to ride it…… could also be costly, depending on how fa4 you want to go down the rabbit hole.

Was it cheap to buy?

Pair of square rocker covers….
Decent condition.. £30..?

I think that I have a set of WP50 forks and triple clamps if they're still or even were the thing to fit to these. I'll dig them out if interested.

I'll get some better picture tomorrow, I had them on a F650GSGD if that's any help. I have a wheel and the spindle to go with them.

They’re the OEM KTM yokes by the look of it. Billet-bike-bits made me some cracking yokes for my GS project bike at a very reasonable price, if you need some making
