As the winter months are upon us my thoughts once again turn to some green laneing and thinking of getting small trail bike to turn some of the knowledge i got from 2 trips at the BM school in South Wales. Are there any lanes left open that are good and manageable rides that dont have the locals chasing you a 12 bore....?

Many thanks for that, but the link doesnt work, had a look at the site however and got a map of right of way. Am i lookingh just for the 'Byway Open To All Traffic' routes or are there others that would be open to use?

Go on to the county council website and find rights of way. Cumbria have marked all those in an easy to follow way.

If that fails let me know and when I get back I'll try to send you some details.:thumb

I'm out around the Lakes trail riding for the weekend on the 22nd/23rd if you need pointed in the right direction and there are loads of lanes to do in the Lakes. some can be challenging.

I just don't like the thought of somebody going out on there first trail ride and being by themself finding themselves having to ride up 3ft rock steps or stuck in a 4ft deep river crossing.
far more fun to do it with other people at least then they can have a good laugh at you.

Thanks Brian, it would be great to get out with someone who knows the area. Unfortunately i cant do that weekend, its my mates 50th bash! I would like to stay in touch and take you up on your offer sometime. The reason for asking about keswick, is we are getting a static van in Keswick in the next few weeks and im looking at maybe stashing a bike there for use when im up rather than thrashing it up the motorway from here in Blackpool. The GS would im thinking be too heavy for Cumbrian trails so thinking something in the 250 cc class, any suggestions on that as well?

Honestly if you can find a Electric start WRF250 they are a nice bike and cheap to maintain. Maybe a older single cam KTM250exc racing or if your looking for a true trail bike a DR250x maybe a XL250degree maybe a two stroke something like a DT200 TS200 all depends what you want to spend what your ability and what your expectations are and to some extent what your build is i.e. height

If your looking for a trail type bike I have a customer who is looking at doing a px deal on a new trail bike and px a DR250 and if your intereted in that sort of bike it might be down your street.

Thanks guys for your input. I may well be interested in the DR250, although i have to say i prefer the look of the WRF250:bounce1 I also see the serow gets full marks from most people and they have anew one at Rocket Centre Blackburn i see. I am certainly a novice off road, although have ridden on road all my life, but bitten by the bug after a couple of the BM Off Road courses i am keen to a bit more. So ambition wise its fairly tame at the moment and see me quite happy on the green lanes. I am a little over 6ft if that should take me in a certain direction. I suppose i just need to take the plunge on something and get cracking!
