Key question

I have hopefully managed to sell my vario panniers and was just going to leave them unlocked for the new owner to get recoded to his own key. However they have asked if I have a spare key to go with them as they are not bothered about having them keyed to his.

My question is will my local Timpsons be able to cut me a key that I can give with the panniers and how much is it likely to cost? Or is it only the dealer that can supply me a key?

Before anyone advises me about giving a key to my bike away the I am meeting the buyer in another town nowhere near where I live so won't be worrying about someone sneaking into my locked alarmed garage and trying to take my chained up bike.

I'm not sure about Timpson's - if they carry the blanks then I guess so, but you'd need to ask.

If not then try these guys https://www.key2code.co.uk/motorcycle-keys.html#/ - I had a spare key cut for my GS by them exactly for opening panniers etc, cost was about £11 from memory - all you need to do is supply your key number and a photo of your key blade and it comes through the post in a couple of days (note they don't supply coded keys, but then you don't need one for panniers anyway)

I think Timpsons or any key cutting place will sort you out. The cost for a key will be minimal.

It's not difficult to recode them yourself, think you need the existing key to remove the complete lock. You'd have to supply them out of the case for him to recode after.


If it was me I'd ask him for his key and code them for him before handing them over.

Timpsons can't do this key for you. when I needed one they recommended my local BMW dealer.

I would not let them have a copy of the key. They will just copy the key instead of rekeying the barrels.

In order to rekey the barrels, you only need the key to release the barrel from the lock.

Here is my suggestion:

Prior to handing the panniers over, use your key to release the barrels from the lock, and let them have the barrels along with the panniers. When the barrels are released, there is no further use for the key.
It only takes a few seconds to release the barrel, so this is not a time consuming solution.

A BM dealer can provide you with a non coded key that can open/lock the panniers but not start a bike.

I have one for the sat nav bracket and seat for my 1250 (Bumot panniers)

Think the cost is about £25 but you might get cheaper elsewhere if a local locksmith has a blank

I've tried Timpsons on a couple of occasions and they've never had the blank in stock. This time I used key2code and cannot fault the service. Very easy to do, arrived in a couple of days and very competative price wise.

Dont give a key away. You might find real insurance problems should the worst happen.

I only did it once something made made think I needed the key, perhaps I didn't try hard enough cos I had the key.

Thanks for all the advice. Have agreed with the purchaser to just sell the cases unlocked and he'll sort out getting them rekeyed at later date
