Keyless - how safe is it really??

What, I believe, Zx9man means is that as he's got to have the key with him anyway what is the point of having keyless ignition?
I tend to agree with him on this one.

Good grief, its exasperating trying to get guys to understand the benefits of keyless!

Is it curious that those of us who have it; would choose it for our next bikes too, I wonder why that is ?

Why is it special?

I prefer a key, i'm a luddite though

Just bought the old model version of a newly launched updated model, because the new 2016 model has

a) Keyless
b) Add Blue
c) LED Daytime Lights
d) HID Lights
e) 6 speed box

I wanted proper bulbs, a real key, no daytime lights, no fancy emission reducing Blue liquid and a 5 speed box, like a proper car (pity a crash box wasn't available, I do like a bit of double de-clutching first thing in a morning)

I wanted proper bulbs,
The LED lights on the GS are bloody excellent !

I'm guessing you are not talking about a bike .... but ; Do you ride in the winter ? If you do , you have just made a huge mistake !

Please, enlighten those of us who, obviously, don't know what the advantages are!!!!

i'd have wanted the 6 speed box, preferably auto. the rest of the stuff i either wouldn't want or wouldn't care about :D

My personal thoughts are if you have a K 1600 GT with central locking then the keyless system is great but as I am buying a 1200 GSA then I need a key to get into my boxes so why would I need keyless when I need to Carrie it with me at all times oh and another point if you have GPS you still need a key to unlock your GPS module from the satnav module on the bike

Cynical fellow that I am I suspect that the electronic module for keyless operation costs less than a steering lock and barrel assembly. With a bit of clever marketing they can sell keyless as a beneficial convenience extra. So lower costs and a higher selling price equals more profit.

We'll probably all have to tolerate it at some point if we buy a new bike.

I went with the 5sp Auto in the end, as the newly launched 6spd model was 600cc down and 25bhp less too, plus I didn't want the faff with Add-Blue - heard about the grief in truck motors and trousered the £6k price saving too, buying the last of the old model, which was too attractive to ignore

Good point and you're probably correct!
Bought my 2013 TC GSA last year and can't see me buying a new one anytime soon (my H-D is 21 years old) so I may be spared the keyless scenario.

I probably use my keyless ignition and petrol cap more often than I use the key to access the panniers on a ride out (unless I am touring or require for a particular purpose I don't have luggage on), I therefore use the keyless part more than the pannier locking and unlocking. We all carry the keys all of the time I just prefer not to have it hanging out of my ignition nor think bugger I've put my riding gear on now where is it to start the bike or need it for refuelling... Things move on and always will if you choose not to embrace it that's cool and obviously everybody has the choice but you can't stop technical advancement wether you like it or want it good or bad. You pays your money and have your choice.

I am sure some on here hated computers etc but now bank on line, use chip n pin and so it goes on....:thumb

Unlikely. There is still a steering lock mechanism, now with electronic actuators. There will still need to be a ring antenna like you have with a coded key. Lock barrels are a generic component that will cost peanuts.

Good grief, it's like banging your head against a brick wall sometimes :blast

I rode a keyless GS for two weeks in the Alps....

What is the real world difference between putting a key into the lock and turning it and pushing the button that replaces it on the keyless model?

SFA, your honour....

:D

I'll take the key, thanks.

If you don't have or need luggage it is indeed very nice just to have it in a pocket and ride off. If however you do have luggage and open it before you ride, and after you get off, the benefits are somewhat diminished as you have to get the key out to do so. As you don't need to put the key in the ignition to start the bike it isn't that hard to leave it in the luggage or seat lock. I have done, once. Sure you get a!f warning sign on the dash if the key is out of range but it's not much use if it flew out of the topbox on the motorway, is it? You can use the plastic key for luggage but it's not very durable and even easier to use.
As someone else has said - with central locking the idea makes more sense.
At least you won't get corrosion in the ignition barrel...

Keyless? - love it!
Worth the extra cost - probably not but still love it
Security risk - isn't everything, lock it or lose. We all know that the determined pro criminal will win in the end!

It's the future
How many would want a car with no power steering, no central locking, and windup windows.
Once you have had these things very few want to go back.

Can someone tell me why keyless is better than using a key ? I can see why power steering is beneficial, appreciate central locking but don't really care too much about electric windows

I have a bike with both types of ignition my RT is keyed ,but my Harley is Keyless , one is not better than the other but the keyless is more convenient.

Nope, still don't get it.
I genuinely can't see how more convenient it can be to carry some sort of electonic card in your pocket over carrying a small key that is taken out of said pocket and placed into the ignition and turned through 30 degrees.
