Kicking in the doors at München

Little known bit of car design trivia here....the chap who designed the 507 used to design wheelbarrows :)

Lined with the hides of 34 very rare red Bavarian Müüencowsen :)

This car belonged to a chap we'll meet later on in this ride report- it's rather cute but somehow I wouldn't want to be seen in it :nenau

Even more cutererer??
363189064_QZkBW-L.jpg

It's very small and light, and even if you couldn't stop the engine and start it again backwards which gave you as many reverse gears as forwards, you can pick them up and turn them around on their own axis....here's Rosie :kissy2 holding the front end 2 foot from the floor

Car by BUUM, lampshades by Ikea

They've got a mini wall of the front ends of the 5 series as well, showing the way they've changed.

Well that's really interesting then.

:blast

This is for Motomartin......and it's a schweeeet thing :thumb2

It's got as many buttons as my Landcruiser!!! :eek

363216101_PHuH8-L.jpg

And there's some even nicer fast stuff in the Msports hall.....

Somewhat Spartan inside...where's the Alpine quadrophonic bassboost boombox and where the hell are the 14 cupholders!!

363407953_xydCM-L.jpg

Silly me :blast There they are, the bass speakers are cleverly sunk into the boot to give a better sound :thumb2

This is probably phenominally important in BUUM's racing history and it may well be the fastest car they've ever produced, but as I don't read German, I won't bother posting this photo.

Doh!!!!

363533167_naQS8-L.jpg

:redlight:redlightMULLET ALERT!!!!!:redlight:redlight
What do you think the nationality of this chap is?? :augie

363538214_nRADe-L.jpg

I like the car though...sort of Ant Hill Mob meets Jag XK140 :)
363542639_Y8Eev-XL.jpg

At one end of the building is a fancypants stairway thing, and in the well of the spiral it forms, they've got several billion euros worth of their latest project, a Hydrogen powered car......
363608153_dRpVQ-L.jpg

It's not very interesting so we had more fun playing 'poke the touch screen info panels' with a random German 6 year old instead.

That was nice.

Why the inspirational scrawlings up the fancypants stairway are in English I don't know....perhaps it's a famous quote or something but I've nver been bothered to google it to find out......

Back to some bikes for a few minutes and then I'll have thinking how the bloody hell do you weld a Magnesium spaceframe chassis (apart from the obvious answer; 'very carefully' :D )

Two more for the old dribblers
362692826_fhL73-L.jpg

Another one, just for Proff this time
In the flesh, I have to admit the orange paint job does actually look really nice.....but imagine considering what colour your next bike will be....it's hardy going to be top of the list is it, Orange?
362675548_oKey5-XL.jpg

This racing machine will be nice

When it's finished :augie
362679025_Pg3Nm-L.jpg

There are lots of video clips running on moniters on the wall and loads of history of the racing classes and trophies won.....Looking at this beasty, you just know you'd have to have balls the size of melons to race it flat out

362682902_6xBWZ-L.jpg

I've never heard of Ernst Jakob Henne, but there's a lot about him and I keep meaning to sit down and look him up......I wonder if he was a contemporary of Bert, the world's fastest Indian rider?
362695974_pxriM-L.jpg

There are surprisingly few modern bikes, but we did find one :)
362703585_xGRb7-L.jpg

And here's something everyone will nearly recognise- the HP2 prototype....
363134489_xivSq-XL.jpg

Spot the differences.....Ohlins rather than the air shock?
Anything else?
Oh yes, it's labelled up as a GS rather than an HP2....

A few bits missing that might be quite important to the rider (footpegs?) but essentially complete

More dribbly old stuff.....
Apparently this is a mono, even though it has a two sided swing arm.

It's their age ya know :blast:rolleyes:

362604631_Ri9Ds-L.jpg

It's got some odd proportions this bike.....it does feel very purposeful though.
362632310_vaGxW-L.jpg

Ronno's great uncle was in the building as well so we gave him a wave across the hall.....
362567885_9udAN-L.jpg

I have to admit they have thought about the layout of the place- they show the bikes and cars from various angles which is quite interesting, as well as making you feel that there's more there than there actually is.

Oo hold on a sec, here's something.....Paging Mr Timolgra....

Ernst Jakob Henne

:hijacked

Ernst used to race up the autobahns at ridiculous speeds pre world war 2

He still had great taste in the 80's as you can see by his choice of modern steed:augie

Between 1928 to 1937, he achieved a total of 76 land speed world records, the last on November 28, 1937 with the 279.5 km/h (173.7 mph) on a fully-faired 500cc supercharged BMW. This record stood for 14 years.

Died in 2005 aged 101 years !!!!! :thumb2

Now here's a lovely car....and it leads up to a serious question so bear with me on this one.....

362516448_LYmEo-L.jpg

Now here's the interesting bit...the spaceframe chassis....

362512838_VdSdt-L.jpg

That's magnesium that is!!

There's a photo of a blokey standing in the middle of one and carrying it on his shoulders....it's extremely light (no shit Sherlock!) but very strong ...I Can't remember how little it weighs but it's one of those silly figures that made me go 'wow!'

362510092_NxzWH-L.jpg

So the question is, how the bloody hell do you weld Magnesium??

I've no doubt Greg Masters could tell us exactly what this is, but I have no interest in racing cars like that so here's a picture of a fast car stuck on the wall :)

362532212_rFd9N-L.jpg

In addition to being a master at identifying old bikes though, I'm also somewhat of an expert on engines.

Just to prove it, this is of course a P84/5 engine from around 2005.

Are you super-impressed??

362539172_5YkhA-L.jpg

And this is a P54 B20 unit
362543318_CD2Hh-L.jpg

This on the other hand is a rare specimen, known amongst us aficionados as an 'ikkleshinyone' :)
362559180_rfzQi-L.jpg

It's a bit too technical to explain here why it's known as that, but if you'd like to , you can call it by the layman's term, an M10 Circa 1966:)

362561974_fWzch-L.jpg

Token arty shot of the walkways and.....zzzzzzzzz
362554942_y7s6p-L.jpg

If you lean far enough over, you can flob a greenie right on the pasenger seat :D

They really realy like dangling things from steel in this place- and timelines, they like those as well.

Some anally retentive German must have thought he'd gone to Valhalla early when Dr Helmut Cheese asked him to do this mobile;
362588844_89o8m-XL.jpg

The only problem is they're going to have to raise the roof a few feet in atwo year's time to keep it going !!
