Kicking in the doors at München

Thanks, I'm guessing it may be one of the few PD tanks that Thunder doesn't have :D

Looks very Mono PD style markings.

:blast Sorry, thought you were talking about No.83 ...the one with the white tank is the same bike as in post #51- there's another shot from a point overlooking that gallery somewhere as well, but it is the one that there's a couple of shots on :)

Rosie came back out of the loo and had to take the camera back in- nothing dodgy going on, but the basins were a good example of the rather over-designed feel of the place.

Over the road from the main museum is 'BMW WELT'...

Dog knows how much it cost, but as a corporate HQ, it lives up to what you'd expect from BUUM

The architect obviously threw away his rulers 'cos there's not many straight lines in the place- this shows about 1/3rd of the volume of the place- it's big!!

It's basically a glorified showroom- I don't think I'd want to use it to actually buy a vehicle as the chances of getting a salesman to spend some time with you and get some personal service are pretty slim...it's an impressive place though.

Just inside the doors (you actually go in through that sand-timer shaped thing and go down a rampyroundy) thet had a big display of the all new (at that time) X6, a coupe version of the X5.

Rosie liked them a lot, which surprised me TBH, but If I was looking for something like that, I'd certainly rather have an x6 than a RR Sport :thumb2

One of the drawbacks of such a building is IMO that the building becomes more of a focus than the things its meant to display.....somewhere over on the second floor here is the Motorrad section and all over the place are cars...spotting them though is hard and to me they haven't done themselves any favours TBH.

I hadn't done any illegal parking for a few hours so I went to getthe bike to remedy the situation.
TBH I would have imagined that we'd spend more time in the building, but it just didn't feel very welcoming so it was actually quite nice to get out and get ready to ride again

Apologies to all the 1200 owners who we'd come to represent- we couldn't be arsed and it's your own fault for buying one...we just wanted to gooooooooo!!!!! :D :dabone

Ah that's better....an hour's BLAST down the motorway heading south and all of a sudden you can see GS Nirvana :D
Fekk the city, Fekk BUMWELTS, Fekk rattly old museum piece bikes that will never turn a wheel, this is what I want- the open road, bumpy bits, twisties and a warm woman in my tent at night wherever we end up :clap:clap:clap:clap

As tends to happen on trips, the bike packing had sort of evolved and changed- I always carry a variety of spare straps so after having two nights of getting wet, I re-arranged things to keep dry stuff away from wet stuff...the mustard coloured dry bag on top of the ortlieb now contains dirty clothes and stinky things and the roll mats have moved to become armrests in case there was to be any nervousness on the mountain roads coming up :)

Always carry spare straps, always have at least one spare dry bag and make sure you have ways of strapping things down, like hooks, slots in back box plates etc and you'll not go far wrong on a long trip- the flexibility aspect is extremely important to making for a stress free trip IMO.

Eyoop...it'smy brand new (as in delivered ten mins before we set off on this trip!) Givi X01 helmet- this time in 'summer' mode.

Top lid I reckon...I have a slightlyy odd shaped head and apart from a bit of pressure that I always get which is cured easily with a bit of targetted thumb pressure, this lid was turning out to be brilliant.

There are some over-the-centre catches inside the chin piece that you flip over and the whole chin piece can be changed from the one in this pic to the one in post 1....this gives a greatly improved airflow and is nice and cool in hot weather- there are also two vents on the top that you swap out, solid ones for wet or cold weather and wire mesh ones for hot weather.

There's also a pair of little inserts for the sides of the chin piece so you can wear it as a jet style helmet, something I ended up doing on the next month's trip to Morocco where I needed to be able to use the two way radio and talkto people on the trails.

It's not an expensive helmet either, and on balance, I'm really glad I got it...recommended!! :thumb2:thumb2

For some reason I don't appear to have any pics of our little jaunt into the mountains but we headed down to Garmisch, had a look around and then followed the German/Austrian border for a while, crossing and recrossing it maybe 8 or ten times and at some points riding along what looked like old border patrol fireroads through the woods, up passes and down some nice twisty drops etc.....top riding but with the front end being a bit light, I had to take it fairly calmly on the downhill and slightly damp twisties.

We had a day's rain and headed south again , then stopped and debated whether to head east and go to Salzburg or to turn West......the clouds to the East won the arguement so we shot across and went up and down a lot more bumpy stuff and finally went to Lichtenstein :thumb

I like Lichstenstein :thumb

Top tip as well....

If you have a rolltop bag full of groty clothes, bung in some water and washing powder, seal it with a load of air in it,strap it on the bike and when you stop in the evening, all you do is rinse it and dry it.Fecking good washing machine it is.and I'm going to put projectvnd stickers over all the moto morocco stickers I see:tears

Lichstenstein is actually bigger than you might think and has some great roads....it's worth a visit

We headed back into Austria, basically running from the weather, missed a couple of the really big passes out because I'm a bit of a poof and I wanted to do them proper justice by riding them in better conditions rather than a bike with compromised handling in the wet two up.

(and we had loads more to do anyway- plus it gives me a chance to say I've got to go back solo asap ;) )

So, we were riding up a nice road in Austria heading north- neither of us had ever seen Neuschwanstein Castle and we thought it would be a nice thing to do, and being just up the road from Lichstenstein, that's where we decided to head for :)

Overtaking any four wheeled vehicle that came into my target field, I suddenly noticed that the white van I had lined up to blitz past had English plates on it........then, I noticed it had a GSCLUB.UK sticker and bugger me if it didn't have a UKGSER sticker on it as well.........and it said 'Hello, I'm Noddy, stop me and buy one' on the back too :D

It had to be done, so grinning from ear to ear, I overtook the old boy and gave him a friendly coffee bean handwave :clap:clap

It was funny seeing his face down there and he recognised us immediately, so I took the next turning off the main twisty road and we pulled up into a carpark of this random village:)

Looook!! It's Noddy!!! :JB

Sorry bout that Vern......I have left the worldbeater stickers on though and we tell an awful lot of people about them as we go around......They are top boxes and we do make sure anyone who asks gets the full guided tour of them :thumb2
:kissy2

It's no use,I'm off into a sulk now:(

Gussets

We had a look around the village and saw a markee that looked like it was serving teas and grub......we walked in to a swarm of happy rosie cheeked Austrians and discovered that it was the local fire brigade's annual fund raising bash....how cool was that!! :D

364271983_W793K-L.jpg

Not only was there tea, coffee and assorted pastries, but there was lederhosen and an oompah oompah band :clap:clap

364250690_MNDAi-L.jpg

We sat and enjoyed ourselves for a bit, getting lots of smiles from the locals who must have wondered who the flip we were but didn't really care

364246891_3rmvG-L.jpg

Turned out Graham was on his way back from Italy with a couple of pogos in the back of his van- he got a bit of oompah music on his phone so I hope if he sees this he may be able to stick it up....

Funny how things happen- all the way across Europe and we bump into Noddy which in turn leads us to being in a tent full of oompah music and friendly locals- it just shows that its the chance things that happen on a trip that cause the best times :beerjug: :oonyack

More dribbly old stuff.....
Apparently this is a mono, even though it has a two sided swing arm.

It's their age ya know :blast:rolleyes:
It's got some odd proportions this bike.....it does feel very purposeful though.
362632310_vaGxW-L.jpg

I always though Mono was short for Mono-Shock, which this has... one swing arm is "single-sided" isnt it?

as for welding magnesium, I'm guessing you either do it in a vacum or in an inert gas environment? but it is just a guess... :nenau

Apologies to all the 1200 owners who we'd come to represent- we couldn't be arsed and it's your own fault for buying one...we just wanted to gooooooooo!!!!! :D :dabone

lol... no worries I think we generally get used to that as 1200 owners ;)

Excellent tip!!! but how the hell did you discover it?

if mono's short for monoshock, what's para short for? parashock?

i admit (as i seem to have started this), that i thought it referred to the single sided swing arm, as does "para" but i don't know what that means.

:thumb2 top read, especially the moody remarks and comments.
Just one :rob side note: The BMW Welt is more aimed for people picking up their BMW car, they have done the deal with their local dealer and then travel to Munich for the fun and excitement of picking up the car "at the factory". VW started that in Wolfsburg with the "Autostadt" and Audi does have it in Ingolstadt as well.
