Kickstarters are ace

So what's the knack to using the kickstart ?. Earlier post say's bike was on side stand, does everybody else do this ?. I once watched somebody with the bike on the centrestand and their left foot on the barrel / cylinder head whilst they kick started the bike with their right foot.

John

Seems a completely stupid way to knacker your centre stand pivots as well as unnecessary stress on the cylinder:eek
Stick bike on sidestand, pull clutch lever in so you can push the kick starter down..release clutch lever and gently push kick starter until you think you have found compression. Then prod firmly but don't try to kick the lever through the floor !! Should start about second kick..maybe third..maybe fourth :D Do make sure you have the right black box like I have fitted:augie or it will be nigh on impossible to kick start.
Hope this helps :thumb2

I don't understand the clutch lever bit. I don't use clutch lever and the kickstart still comes down OK. Am I missing something?

You need to ensure that you get in the correct position and that your set up is good

Once you have done it - it is easier the next time

The more you do it the easier it becomes

If you do it occasionally it is not as easy

If you never get to do it - the first time is always an experience

If you do it everyday it is just a matter of routine and both of you will both get used to it

It is quite a natural thing to do and with practice it should happen quite quickly

Ah so it 's that shagging kickstarter that we are on about then:augie

Dammit..I have a spare one number 0227 100 113 ( I wonder what it is off?)
Blue g/s is 20 miles away so can't check it...although it is harder to kick start than my previous sienbenrock g/s !! My current g/spd doesn't even have one fitted

Has anyone got either the 113 or 116 floating around? mine is a 103 and won't kick start :blast

No doubt you have seen my earlier thread ( hope so as I can't find it:D )..I had the 103 in and like yours wouldn't kick....fitted the 113 and she kicks 1st or 2nd time, every time :bounce1

Well worth the mod....but I doubt you'll get one s/h:(

K'INELL Kenny :eek
what are you on ??
THIS IS THAT THREAD :augie:augie:augie:augie

Generally a waste of time for road use, it annoys me on the 80G/S as it sticks into my left leg.......uncomfortable....and maybe dangerous

If you are riding around with a buggered battery....well that's your choice

If you are riding around on an Airhead that will not start on the first, second or third go.........get it sorted as

Why have you got that paralever "screen" on a mono?

PS - I see - you have also put a PD Tank on a mono - what's that all about

So it doesn't feel left out, as the other "mono" looks like a para. Might even be one, just has a three nut rear wheel to confuse us.

and he's supposed to be an Airhead Moderator.......what's the world coming to?

Depends really, I intend to take mine for a long trip and just around the corner :augie. If there are any issues, then I am looking for contingency all the way. Hence the kick start :rob

If that is the case........if it were me, I would take the lever off and carry it as a spare.............as I said it will stick into your left leg

I can see it may cause some issue but mine doesn't stick into my leg?! I tend hang my legs out wide [oh err :augie] so I'm don't seem to have the same problem

You must have one gammy left leg Bill :D!! Never ever had that problem with any mono with kickstart...then again I'm young and agile :augie

PS I'll stick the other wheel nut back on my mono, soryy paralever....:D

Just re-awakening this thread as I'm getting ready to start a restoration of a very early G/S and I'm half minded to experiment with the 'standard' small battery + kickstart + deleted starter set up of the first year or so of production - just for kicks (geddit!?). ('Standard' is in inverted commas because I should think that just about every purchaser spec'ed electric start).

Some useful info above re. ignition trigger units, i.e.:

"Version without kick starter - Bosch 0227 100 103 or Telefunken 12.14-1244 477"

"Version with kickstarter - Bosch 0227 100 116 or Telefunken 12.14-1244 478"

+ Kenny's confirmation from experience that the Bosch 0227 100 113 works too.

Just out of interest, does anyone know the technical background here? I'm guessing the 113 and 116 control units have some extra logic to add a generous slab of ignition retardation at sub-tickover engine speeds, but I'd be interested to know by how much and at what speed.

Also, does anyone out there have a 9Ah battery holder (61211244253) that they'd like to sell?

In the same vein, I'm guessing that there was also a non starter button right hand switchgear assembly, but my G/S ST auxiliary parts book doesn't seem to show an alternative cover for the switchgear w/o a starter button. The parts book does show an alternative number for the right hand switchgear (also for the left), but this appears to be a substitute for the same thing (first option has an 'A' after it).

As suggested above, deleting the electric start is not exactly a sane move, but I'd just like to give it a try for 'historical' reasons.
