Interested in your comment in 2. re quality/finish compared with GS. I changed my RT LC after 6 months for the XR because of corrosion on the engine and final drive on the RT plus wafer thin paint and crap pannier locks on the RT. XR just in a different league as was the RR before the RT. I think BMW have issues with production quality re GS and RT. Even though warranty covers these issues for 2 years resale values will be affected by poor build/paint quality.

The XR has the same grin/wow factor that the K12 had back in 2007. 4 cylinder better than 2 IMHO.

I picked as ultimately its a better bike for me than the GS lighter and more nimble and plays to my inner hooligan :D

If i am honest the GSA was a tad too big and heavy for me even though i loved it. There are many things i will miss about it but the XR suits me better.

I have done a 230 mile day on it and yes so far the comfort is almost equal to the GSA as the ergonomics are pretty much the same so touch wood it will be fine on our Scottish caper. No where near as good on Motorway as the GSA but I avoid them like the plague any way

Spot on, it's not a motorway mile eater, you need the RT for that or a car. If you like to sit in 6th and trot along then the XR is the wrong bike for you. The point of the XR is to use the engine and box all the time. However I find the comfort as good as my GS.

So what your saying even tho BMW will sell you a touring package so your able to pack away your house and go across the water on a touring holiday, obviously getting to and fro many places in Europe sometimes you need to cover some motorway to kill the miles or time, so this ain't the bike for that !! Nah Cure the buzz in the bars or ride thro it and this bike can happily sit all day on a motorway if needs be, problem with bods they try to mirror image there car with regards to screens-heated seats-and so on.

From my test ride which included sections of the A3 I would say the XR would be fine on long motorway rides and I would guess at steady 80-90 mph would probably be as close as it gets to equalling the GS for fuel consumption! I would also guess that it would be more stable fully loaded on windy days?

....or buy an S1000RR, get some proper power, add some Ventura luggage and cross Europe on that. People do, of course.

Of course an S1000XR will trundle down a motorway, every bit as well as an RT or a CBR 600 or Versys for that matter and of course they'll all go round hairpins all day in the Alps when you get there... It's only 1200 riders that worry about their first gear ratios and any uphill bend sharper than the multi-storey car park at Tesco after all.... And hey, nobody wants a 1200 any more, though the bigger tank is nice and that screen, with its winglets sooooo smooth at 110 with the visor up and if only the XR had a shaft drive and bigger panniers (I mean have you seen them on the XR? Plastic and all, that'll do nothing in a crash) and there's nowhere to put a bike-to-bike radio and no nobbly tyres and the torque, what about the talk of the torque what are we going to talk about....

My observation was that it isn't as good on a motorway as a GSA which is true but its not bad and actually if you like motorways more than fine. As for fuel consumption it won't get anywhere near that of a GS but that isn't why i bought it and the lower the figure the bigger my smile

There is loads of room under the seat ! much much more than my outgoing GSA LC. I have managed to fit the autocom and the Kenwood radio under the seat and there is still room for my expansive ( much more comprehensive than the screw driver BMW give you) tool kit and puncture repair outfit so on that score it beats the GSA hands down.

In my book the GSA was a very competent tourer that would give some of fun in the mountains when you got to them whereas the XR is a competent tourer that will scorch most things in the mountains when you get there !

So come on come clean are you getting one ????

I made the bit up about the radio ;)

As I only got my 2nd GS LC in July, at the moment, no. But as for the next bike that is in debate with the other half who wasn't that impressed mainly down to the rear seat!

I think at the moment the XR would need a companion like my K1300R had, but I am happy with the GS being my only bike?

Indeed fuel consumption isn't a major consideration on a motorcycle unlike a car, but it was just an observation as I find the worst fuel consumption on the GS on long motorway stints between 80-100 where as the XR will only be purring along!

Just out of interest what sort of mpg are guys getting?
For comparison the 'puter on my 1190 is saying 39 on the current tank and 42 over the last 1000 miles. That's mostly town and A/B roads. Very little, if any M-way.

My XR is pretty much in line with your figures but it has only done 800 miles so i expect it will improve on that in time and as i practice self restraint

Mmmmm....... Practice self restraint you say? I think you'll find that as you get used to the power you seem to use more of it........ At least that's what the big KT has been like :D

Interested in your purchase of the lowered model, as I'm 5-10 as well and my only complaint about the XR is the stupidly high seat.

(oh and the looks that only a mother would love, but let's not go there...)

Do you have any pics?

Ta

It looks the same as the standard. There are some pics on this forum, I think, if not search for the S1000XR forum. You really need to sit on one as it's not just about your height it's about your leg length. The seat is a bit wider at the front than a GS. I believe it drops the height by around 50mm, certainly enough for me to flat foot.

Fixed. No charge.

Spare us any pictures.
