Kitty / splitting bills on tours

We had an extraordinary occurence on a Wander, when one of the punters (a past member of this forum) suggested - in all seriousness - each of us should pay what we thought the meal was worth.

Ting Tong ‘Don’t leave me’ Tom, had been quite right when he’d warned me “He’ll be a cock”.

When me and 5 others went yo Picos for a week, we all put 50 euros in a kitty, then topped it up when needed.

The latter applies to more than just expenses of course. ‘Good tourists’ are good tourists, whilst bad ones can simply be excluded from future trips.

Yep.
It's a "trusted" group. They travel together quite often (all Italians) I do join them along the way sometimes.

The interesting thing about the apps is that you can "split" subgroups, because you indicate who paid and for whom. Whole group or individuals.
In this particular trip there was 9 of us in total.

I left from London with 2 in tow, to Bilbao and met the larger group in Pamplona.
One traveled from Morocco straight until she met us in the Picos.
Rest of the group left from Civitavecchia to Barcelona and then Pamplona.

At some point we all joined the same Splid account (one of us had a paid account, you can do more), but we were able to easily split sub-groups expenses, etc.
We didn't always travel all together for the same trip.
We settled a week or two after everyone was back home.

Again, since the trip was planned on paper by me and my friend coming from Rome, we also booked 90% of the hotels between the two of us, advanced all the payments, and the app made recovering the fund an easy and quick process.
There is also the "fun" factor of having a ledger during the trip of the person that is "bleeding" the most during the trip. :D

I only travel with people I know….and like…but don’t tell them that….. oddly enough, we don’t have a plan…..but it always works out in the end…

Last kitty i was involved with i had fish n chips and the bill was split.

£60 for fish n chips... I checked the menu and it was £18, which is still expensive to be fair.
No lube no bending over just £60

Stay on your own is my advice 🤣

Likewise. 50 euros for a pizza doesn’t work

I've done a few football trips with the same couple of pals over the years, this involves booking match and train tickets for all 3 of us at the same time so we can sit together.
One of the chaps pays instantly, the second the tickets are booked, the other is a cnut and promises to pay on the day but desperately tries to wriggle out out of it and says he'll transfer the money when we get home but then doesn't. He always pays in the end but it can be months later, in the meantime he sends photographs to whomever is owed the money from holidays he's enjoying often thanking them for 'The fun I'm having on your money'. It's reached the stage where the other chap, who always pays, has been known to frog march him to a cash machine and stand over him while he gets the money out. I, on the other hand won't buy his tickets anymore.

Splitwise works very well - hey we agree on something :)
Same here, just got back from a weeks trip (cycle bikes rather than motorbikes) All did splitwise on the way home, and it's painless. under 10 EUR like coffee's we just ignored, anything above went on there...

There is nomally 4 couples and whoever pays the bill for the restuarant or bar or coffees just enters it into Splitwise and the app sorts out who owes who at the end of the day or weekend - it avoids all arguments.

Many years ago (2003 perhaps?) I went on a trip with a Dutch bloke among our group of 5. We started splitting meals evenly, food and drink, but as soon as he realised this his habits went up. Reached a peak at a lunch restaurant in that town in Belgium with the tank in the main square - can't for the life of me remember the place, but lots of you will have been there - when the English contingent had a pizza and a beer and he ordered the fillet steak and half a bottle of expensive red wine. The thing is, he was entirely shameless about it when challenged. His English wife said this was typical of the Dutch who would be very open about their tight-arsed ways, and not see anything wrong with trying to work any system. Apparently he would never volunteer to buy a round in a pub unless asked. If asked, he'd do it, but all the time anyone else was saying "Anyone fancy another?" he'd just sit there and accept it.

He came on the following year's trip but abandoned us and ran for home when it started raining.

To answer the original question: I no longer split the bill. I don't drink very much (if at all) and begrudge subsidising other people's drinking, much as they would begrudge me buying 20 B&H and adding it to the bill to be split evenly! We either pay our own way, or keep a running total and divvy it all up afterwards.

Yup, irritating cnuts when they do it…. However I am also not adverse to be blunt and direct, just like they are, and basically tell them “ you're paying for that mate”.
Had a tour back in 2024 with our club and one twat who did the same and i basically told him to fucking pay up cloggie cnut…he was a bit shocked at being called out but i said it wasn't OK to sponge off others….
