Hello all,

Can anyone recommend a Laptop Repair centre or service? I'm in London, but can travel to the right place, or these things can be done by mail of course.. Any help appreciated :thumb2

Thanks,
Rob

What's wrong with it - Do you need the data stored on it? Is it a Mac / PC?

often it is cheaper to buy a replacement laptop if it is knackered as the cost is so close to the repair costs. I have got a USB/HD convertor lead so I can whip out a HD from a dead machine to recover the data from them (well worth the £10!)

If it is a valuble laptop / Apple/Vaio etc then there will be a number of local places. If you want, I can take a look at it for you but you would need to describe the fault first to see if it is worth delving deeper.

Thanks for the response.. :thumb2

It doesn't power up. I believe it might be the power connection part to the motherboard, evidently that's some sort of weakness but can't be sure. It's not the battery or external power adapter.

It's a Sony TX Vaio Ultraportable. I'm not interested in the contents of the HD, it was a handy little machine and thinking Windows 7 might give it a new bit of life...

Cheers,
Rob

I had a similar problem, power to the laptop but it wouldn't start up, after a bit of research on the net for possible causes it turned out to be a simple memory fault.

Try taking out the memory cards (you will probably have two) reinsert one into the main slot, not the expansion slot and try starting it up, if it fails substitute one card for the other and try again (it will run ok on one but slow).

If it works on one the other is duff, problem is if you put both in it won't work at all, so it's a trial and error job. If this is the problem buy a new one and put it in the expansion slot, simple job.

Hope that makes sense, it's not difficult and worth a try before paying someone to look at it.

The cards are probably under a removable cover on the base of the laptop.

Cheers Bob, have already had a crack at that to no avail :(

This might sound crazy, but apparently it does work on some lappies :

Remove the adapter (mains) lead from 'puter and then the battery.
Hold down the 'power on' switch for about a minute, then release.
Leave 'puter alone to sulk for about an hour and reconnect battery then mains power.
Attempt to power up !

One last thing, there have been a series of faulty mains transformer packs, is yours actually functional....what voltage output does it show on test ?
