Laptop wont start up

BM, is it running Windows XP, if it is look on the bottom and see if the windows licence key is still legible, if it is XP Service pack 1 or 2 and you can read the licence PM me your address and I'll send you a copy.

The licence key is still legible, and it is XP but I think it's service pack 3. That's what I saw in the updates list when I could still get into it.

as it is an acer there is a hidden recovery drive.

as its booting up hold hold the ALT key and keep tapping F10 until you get the recovery screen - follow the instructions and its done.

Ya beat me to it, Alt +F10 will go to rescue and recovery, reload from there

Doesn't work. I keep ending up with what I assume is the "Blue Screen Of Death"

It says
" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF8986524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)"

I'm pissed though, and none of this makes sense to me :beerjug:

Service pack 3 would have been a downloaded update, As long as it's less than 5 years old it's most likely SP2.

Dunno how old it is TBH. :nenau Probably around the five year mark, give or take a couple of years.

I have acquired a CD of XP which is now trying to install again after the battery removal. :thumb

But thanks for the offer DB. :thumb2

you really should try linux mint..
download it as an iso - burn it to a cd
stick it in, boot up from cd,
bobs yer uncle

i wonder

I wonder if you have an issue with the ram(memory), has it got 2 memory boards ie 2 of 256mb or 2 of 512mb, if so use one at a time and see if it works, that might also expalin why its so slow.
you have to remove it with the machine off, its not hot swappable.ie you cant unplug it with the machine on.
Just bootup with one board.if there is only one, can you borrow another, and swap it over?Paul

Well, I've got XP running in a fashion but I think I need to run Windows Update but now it doesn't connect to the internet at all. It doesn't even recognise any wireless card or anything. I even connected with a cable and still no joy.
We're getting somewhere albeit slowly.
I reckon I need to install some drivers now?

It's just freezing up at the log in stage again, just like it did before the clean install.
Am I correct in assuming the hard drive is bolloxed?

Right, I've installed Ubuntu which seems to be working OK, the computer is responsive and everything but I think I'm missing some drivers - specifically I can't connect wirelessly to the internet. I've been to the Acer website for the driver download but it's only for Windows XP, no mention of Linux at all. I tried downloading it but it didn't seem to work.

Any ideas? :nenau

Latest update

Still running Ubuntu but I still would like to reinstall windows.
I've swapped for another memory board (1gb) and tried reinstalling XP but again it gets so far then totally freezes the machine up and I have to remove the power lead and battery to power it down.
So, is it a hard drive I need to shop for now? :nenau

Do you have any way of running a disk checking utility (such as CHKDSK from a command line in safe mode) to check and correct unreadable/bad sectors ??

The problems seem rather odd.

I would do a CHKDSK on the new Hard Disk. Just because it is new, doesn't guarantee by any means that it is OK.

The other thing I would look at is the motherboard BIOS. I would check that it has the latest firm ware update from ACER loaded. Since the laptop has a history of problems, that should certainly be checked.

I suppose we can discount the main board overheating as it sounds like the problems occur when your laptop is cold.

did the laptop originally run vista and downgrade to XP?

meh ignore just saw it has an xp licence on the bottom so this won't be the problem with the reinstall of xp

On the underside of the laptop, is there a compartment for RAM? Normally 2 or 4 small Phillips screws holding the cover on?

If so, open it, check for RAM modules installed. There may be 2, pull one out, try the machine. Still hangs? Swap that module out with the other and run on the single one again. Still hanging?

..If so, unlikely to be RAM, unless you have TWO bad memory modules - in which case, to be absolutely sure, see if anyone else has some comaptible RAM modules and try theirs. Last resort to iron out it isn't RAM is to buy one module for that machine. Kingston memory's website has a "RAM Configurator" IIRC, this lets you put in your laptop model and tells you what modules it accepts. Grab a part number and go find one on the web and Add to Cart, buy it, try it.
