Hi again all! :)

With the expiry of the factory warranty on my '13 LC comes the opportunity to service it myself.
And with a new bike comes the dreary process of having to re-learn which aftermarket parts are available, from which suppliers, and which are not!

So, for the edification and delight of those good folk who love getting their fingers greasy, here are some observations and resolutions that may save you some time and effort.

AIR FILTER:
Despite what the Uni Filter website says, Uni do make a foam air filter for the LC. It's part number is NU 7315.
Pipercross make air filters for BMWs, but do not currently make one for the LC.
Twin Air and Motorex list no BMW applications on their websites.

OIL FILTER AND FUEL FILTER:
I had a very interesting conversation with the local Mahle/Behr distributor the other day. They have plans to bring in the OC 619 oil filter (which is the OE BMW oil filter without BMW branding).
And would you believe it - their import plans also include the KL 315 fuel filter, which is the replaceable, aluminium-bodied cartridge fuel filter fitted to the LC (and all F-series parallel twins).
ETA on this stock is unknown but - quote - "Very soon". :bounce1

SPARK PLUGS:
For this service, I will be using NGK LMAR9AI-8 plugs.
These are the exact dimensions to fit the LC engine, but have an Iridium electrode, and are one heat-range colder than standard.
Availability was no problem. I got them from the local goodie shop, which usually keeps stock of stuff for the local KTM boys (these are the standard plugs for the KTM 350 E-XC).
I wanted plugs in heat range 9 to help combat a pinging problem on this engine - I suspect that the local fuel is crap / watered d
If you want these plugs in the original heat range (8), that's no problem, either. LMAR8AI-8 plugs are standard fitment on the K1600GT and derivatives.

Now, a question from my side: can anyone help with the recommended cold valve clearances for this engine?
Thanks! :thumb

At last!

Great to see someone else eager to get their hands dirty servicing these bikes! good factual info - thanks Mac

I bought the air and oil filters from my local dealers, oil online from opie oils.
Biggest saving from home servicing is the labour charges.
I also have access to equipment to reset the service light.

Can I purchase something to reset the service indicator?

Wish it was cheaper
Is it of much value other than the service reset?

It is indeed.
Examination and resetting of fault codes, bike-component actuation and testing, hassle-free bleeding of ABS brakes, logging of critical values in real time and to a spreadsheet... and what I've just mentioned is just the basic stuff, really.

Don't think of it as just a 'service light resetter'. It's much, much more than that.

Get the service light reset to a high mileage and long interval and then you won't have to get it reset every year.

Hi again all! :)

With the expiry of the factory warranty on my '13 LC comes the opportunity to service it myself....

When I picked up my GSA I bought a oil filter and 4 qts of BMW 5w-40 oil to do the 600 mile service. Since I switched to Mahle filters and Shell Rotella T-6 5w-40 for the subsequent services. I did buy BMW plugs after not being able to locate the NGK branded ones, thanks for posting that. Other than a software download the dealer hasn't touched it and the warranty is still in force. In S.A. is it somehow required that BMW do any routine maintenance during the warranty period?

Where do I get my hands on such a DVD?
