Bikes for me are all about how they feel to ride, above all else, - the 'dynamics', how 'nice' the riding experience is.

I had the first generation 1200GS in 2005, the twin cam 1200GS in 2010 and now the 1200 GS LC wonder-boxer :D

The 2005 GS was the first BMW that I had owned - once I bought this bike I found that it was so 'dynamically' good that I stopped riding my other bike (Ducati Monster), it never got a look in so I sold it a few months later.

I then up-graded to the 2010 twin-cam and it was 'dynamically' a step up from the 2005 bike, not a huge step but nice enough. Only negative was having to use 98RON to get the full experience. Overall it was pretty similar to the 2005 bike, slightly better engine but not much else.

This new LC by comparison is like chalk and cheese, it is 'dynamically' a generation ahead of then 2005 bike. The riding experience is just so much 'nicer' than the previous 1200s.

So forget all the crap about fuel consumption, 'planted-ness', 'robustness', 'plastics v real metal', 'electronics; etc, etc, etc - This bike is the 'nicest' 1200 so far by a huge margin!

Yes but it all depends what you want, doesn't it. It's about opinions. I have no doubt it is a very good bike- there are lots of things that make a GS as been stated elsewhere.

The Fuel Consumption thread started by me is a valid question but it turned into the typical load of contrary bollocks.

Happy that you're enjoying your new bike. There are however other people out there who didn't buy it without seeing or testing one, so give everyone a break and let them ask a few valid questions and don't everyone be so bloody touchy.

Christ, I feel like a total nay sayer. In reality I'm absolutely not. Postponed two tests now but very much looking forward to trying it out :thumby:

+1 Rob

The WC section has a touch of narcissism about it, the few that have bought them are going around with a very large dose of backslapping and self and/or group congratulation

Whilst the rest of us look on, finding it mildly amusing no doubt

However we do have an interest in the bike, i'm having a test ride next week and have a genuinely open mind, despite what i've read

We haven't rushed in................

a) We like to evaluate before we buy and we're not losing out by waiting
b) I'd sooner wait until the initial furore has died down, accessories come on stream
c) Any potential glitches are identified and fixed

So, give us some credit and don't just tell us that we can't afford it and are all just jealous, when in reality we're not and we're just sitting back

Take our banter, for what it is...................just banter and above all enjoy your new WC

Good post JB:thumb Like you, I'm taking it as exactly that, banter, and am enjoying playing along.:D I've been here long enough to know how this place works, but there are a few new members that don't, and are taking everything too seriously, and also personally in some cases.:rob

We all ride the same bike (well, most of us:blast), so there is a common interest on this forum, but sometimes people like to spit the dummy.:comfort Not everyone will like the new GS, as we all want different things from our bikes, and not everyone likes the older GS, and wouldn't have dreamed of owning a new GS until the current model came along, as it wasn't their "thing".:comfort

And that's what makes this place unique.:beerjug::JB

Ha ha ..

Well ... I've put a deposit down on one.

And I only went for a feckin' test ride 'cos I like to jump on new bikes and try 'em out :blast

I do completely agree with gr8roberto though - it's all about what makes you tick and what you want out of a bike.

I can absolutely see why the 'old skool' shall we call them, like their 11**'s. If somebody like Hobo Tim went back to Mongolia on his solo trip, he'd probably be mad not to do it on his 1150. So I absolutely get the feel, the soul, the 'thing' that is so difficult to describe, about Oil heads, air heads and the early generation stuff.

For me, well, I'm not old enough for that (and that alone) yet :P I still yearn for the occasional manic sports bike performance, even though I also love the chill out galaxy chocolate fast trot, that the GS's own more than any other bike.

This new bike definitely looses, or has lost, some of that galaxy chocolate the 11** have, but ... but ... it does have manic hoon for the first time.

And I say Yee har :D

I don't expect everyone to agree, as you say we all want something different, each to their own, which is why there will never been consensus.

I ride almost every day so I prefer to have a bike that is 'nice to ride' it has to 'feel' right and the LC fits the bill better than the previous 1200s. Fuel is a consideration but 'niceness' is at the top of my list - anyway 53 mpg is better than the Triumph, Multistrada and KTM so I am happy :-)

I thought the WC was brilliant on my test ride, but I have an old XR600 and a ZX12R with Flat bar conversion so whilst I was grinning from ear to ear after riding it, it wasn't for me.

Then I got offered the deal I got to buy the 90th Anniversary GSA, and it suddenly became a no brainer for me. And being a Bat Fastard 6' tall and 19st, I don't look as daft on a GSA.

Oh, forgot ..... I have to say "planted" don't I? if I mention GSA and WC in the same post? WTF does that mean BTW, should I be watering it and fertilising it to get the best from it?

Enjoy those new WC's, thank feck you all bought them, the 1200 Hexhead section looks positively "normal" now :) :)

Was under the impression that all the posts were done with humour. I have owned 2 x GSA push rod and OHC, K1300s and a K1600. All had their faults but all were fantastic bikes. My new LC is also fantastic, so far. When I am too old and frail to carry on I will buy an 1100.:D

Now I do get that! I have a 2010 GSA, and test rode the new GS. Get back on the GSA and it does feel very 'planted'. The front on it feels like a spade that you dig into your potato allotment! It might be a bit slower to turn; not quite as nimble on it's feet, but you just know that the front aint going anywhere.
That's not to say the standard GS feels flighty or skittish, but it isn't as 'planted' as the GSA. :thumb

There's a rather large difference between being the best 1200 so far, and being the best GS so far.

I have no doubt that the toilet is a better bike by many of the criterion that one can judge a bike on, including all of the previous GS models, but one of those criteria is, as Giles says, not easily defined.......

Hear, hear. Backslapping group hug time!!

I had sports bikes and loved 'em but as I got old (and lazy) it was taking the fun out of riding I came back from a dash across German on a Ducati and the next day it hurt..... Few days later saw a GS and knew that was it.. Very nearly had an 1150 GSA but then got a great deal on a 1200 new, I loved that bike and would still have it if some twat had been more carful. But every cloud... Now I've an LC sitting in the garage and I'm as happy a dog with double genitals !

I'd love an 1150 for the rufty tufty image, may be I'll have one in a few years when the current owners have seen the light and moved on and the dealers are desperate to get shot!!!

Let the banter continue!!

Anyone at the Thundersprint this weekend BTW?? :bounce1

I'm sure my next bike will be a WC - and have no interest in an 1100/1150 although I did own one for 5 years (and loved it at the time).

However I want to hear a balanced view - nothing is perfect - and I do not believe it can be better in every way. So be honest - if I want marketing shite I can pick up a brochure or pop into Vines.

It's the young cocky nephew of the 1150.

Uncle 1150 is a bit slow on the computer, doesn't play wii or play station and types with two fingers. (bollox ... that is me to a T !!)

Little LC Nephew touch types, texts at three figure speeds on his smart phone and beats everybody at Grand Theft Auto.

The new LC is a bloody good bike. I was really really impressed. On the move, change engine mapping. Select what you want, it preloads it on the dash, you dip the clutch once and it moves into that 'mode'. That in turn alters the damping to something preset which you can over ride if you want to.

Couple of hump back bridges coming up? Hit mode, hit enduro, dip the clutch to select it .. hit the throttle stop!! Sorry, but that is bloody cool in my book!

Does uncle 1150 think that's cool? Ooooo FFS he says, that little jumped up cocky Nephew of mine, he's too feckin' clever for his own good ...

Will I miss the chocolate galaxy of wisdom and maturity that my 1200 had? Yeah, no question. Two up to Italy later in the year and the maturity and reliable wisdom of Uncle would have been good to have on board. her indoors will definitely miss Uncle.

Does Uncle want to rip it up round the back roads with little Nephew? Nah .. he's growing up and getting bored with all that. He's a very respectful rider still, and when he gets a lick on he's like a retired enduro champ; smooth and effortless. Little nephew sees that in him, (and hugely respects him for it..) but still beats him with his fast 21st century gaming / texting fingers.

The LC is the new generation. It wears it's trousers with it's pants showing, and is very computer literate.

I am shite on a computer :D but my belt is undone and my trousers are coming down boys .. :D
