Leaks from oil filter

Changed the oil on my GS, and tightened the filter to the recommended torque, having first put a smear of oil on the seal. It leaked a bit, so I tightened it. Still leaks. Tightened more. Still leaks, not much, about a tablespoonful a week. I've even tried another filter, which also leaks. It is annoying, though. I daren't tighten it any more for fear that it will be a pain to get off. I've had loads of Jap bikes, and never had to tighten more than hand tight. Anyone else had this problem? Or am I doing something elementary wrong?

I have K/N filter and I have the same problem but I am not bothered I think is normal I dont know

Was the rubber seal off the old oil filter there when you took it off?
I have it on good authority that sometimes it sticks in the hole and its a bugger to try and seal the new one

Make sure the seating area surface isn't corroded....

Put a clean pan below the oil filter screw off the new filter and stick digits up into the orifice from whence said filter came out of and see if you have another "Wubber Wing" up in there

Sometimes they stick and there's practically no way to get a seal with 2 wubber wings!!!

I had this very same problem, old filter o-ring stayed in place when old filter removed. I couldn't get the new filter to screw on. Took bloody ages to figure it out

I did wonder about the old seal being left in, so I had a good look with a mirror - I'd kept and old one which snapped off when the bike fell over for just this. Anyway, the seal was off OK, and there were no signs of any corrosion that I could see. It'th a mythtery, as Toyah used to say.

Is the flange on the filter flat/round? It may have been doinked in transport?

Confuscious Say "Sirry person! You Need USe Fingors cos Wubber wing just look like flange! Stick in fingors and wiggle about make sure tis only metal in there! Mean to Say! When last time you see gynacologist use mirrors???????"

Also you'll need to unscrew the filter to check it's own ring and flange for nicks or damage
