After removing & cleaning the carbs, installing new O-ring & gaskets, I find the left unit on my 91 GS is leaking through the new gasket. About 1 drop per 30 seconds. Replacing with another new one hasn't cured it. No evidence of damage or the gasket being pinched.

Any thoughts on what might be going on, or of a fix?

Thanks in advance

Sounds more like your float heights a mile out. Did you check it when you were doing the other jobs?

Someone over on the ADV line suggested the cork gasket needs oiling first. That seems to be working so far. Will check again tomorrow.

Thanks for the input.

Bollocks, The fuel should not be up that far except when riding

Check your float heights it takes about 10 seconds per carb

Turn off fuel taps

Drop off Fuel bowl

Hold float up

turn on one tap

lower float until fuel flows then lift float till fuel stops

The lower edge of the carb should be parallel to the horizontal ridge on the float as the fuel stops flowing and remains stopped!

turn off tap and rebuild if correct and check the other carb

If it needs adjusted check your manual It's better that way !

If you don't want to accept to your question from Old Hands like Rob who lives and breathes Airheads don't come on and ask advice and then give us crap from ADVrider

P.S. Just so you legalities are covered!

Remember Please to extinguish any Incandescent materials before working with inflammable liquids

The float checks out as suggested by Jaythro. Oiling the gasket slowed the leak down to a sweat, now offering a drop about once a half hour. Still too much though. Part of the larger leak may have been caused by the bike being nose down on blocks under the centrestand, as I was also working on the rear end.

Problem solved!

Upon removing the floats to check that they actually do float, I discovered that the float hinge pin was not fully engaged in its locating hole on the outer side. Impossible to see, but more obvious once trying to remove it. This allowed the float to move more than designed, thus the leak.

Now not leaking with the petcocks open.

Thanks, Cookie for pointing me right.
