A guy I work with is looking at a 01 1150, but there seems to be oil leaking from the vicinity of the oil filter.

Has anyone come across this before or have any idea what it may be. Was thinking myself that it may be a pinched seal or maybe some of the old seal is still in there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as he is coming back to bikes and could do a damn sight worse than a GS

Thanks

My bike is an 1100 but I believe they are very similar in that area, as you suggest perhaps the filter, there are also oil cooler connection banjo bolt and the oil sight glass, all of which could be the source of the leak, any of them can be easily and cheaply rectified by a competent DIY mechanic.

HI
I had one brought to me with an oil filter leek and somehow the owner had tried to remove the filter himself. In doing this simple job he CRACKED the engine case in the filter hole. How I will never know. Had to strip the motor and have the case welded.

Welcome to the site feller.:beerjug:
Its easy to leave the old rubber seal in the housing or have a crush washer breakup but i've seen a leak caused by loose crankcase screws.
It MAY be a simple job but its hard to tell when you're not standing in front of the bike.
If it is something simple,i'd have thought the current owner would have put it right to get the best price.
Assume the worst and bid the owner low.

Probably the bodgers favourite 'whack a screwdriver through the filter to remove it' trick?....

Yup, I had one of those, too. Couldn't work out why it kept leaking from the filter. Replaced it several times, oiling the rubber do dah each time. Still leaked, or so it seemed. Was getting the clutch changed an asked them to have a look, as I was beginning to think I'd lost the plot and they found a small, screwdrived shaped gouge. They patched it neatly for me, and problem now gone.

Thanks all. Will try to get a better look at the bike. The owner has the correct filter removal tool so I think some closer inspection is in order. Will keep you posted.

Snap. Looks like someone did the same here. Stripped and cleaned the bike yesterday and lo and behold there was a badly patched hole in the filter housing. Why can't people use the proper tools?

Thanks to all for the advice, gonna walk away from this one.
