Little project for 2010

Thunder, this is where I have got to with my cafe racer project.

Have done no mechanical work just experimented with getting the look right. Being a mono means it is easy to make the rear look clean. Have added 60mm to the shock to lift the back up. Paint scheme with be black. On hot airheads thread there is a silver cafe that I like, the wheels are black with the spoke edges returned to alloy.

At this stage the clip ons will contact the tank and I will have to have both legs removed to use the footpegs

I am just bolting things on to see how and where before doing any structural changes.

Mate Dave keeps mentioning classic racing when he sees the R80, maybe.........:D

 It's fun isn't it.

Looks like you've got the makings of a cracking bike there, look forward to hearing how it progresses. :thumb2

In my case as I said I did not intend to get started until next year, but unfortunately I made the mistake of taking the bodywork off for a closer look and next thing I new things had got out of hand. :augie

Bit of an update for those following the thread or who call in by wistake.

Heads are still away to have hardened valves fitted and be fettled by Steve Scriminger, barrels will go back on shortly after fitting new piston rings and stainless steel push rob tubes both of which arrived this week along with a number of other parts including stainless filler plugs for the engine and rear drive.

Picked up an early model BMW alloy fitler box and enine cover which after some advice from an ex moderator of this parish is being fitted to improve air flow together with a Green cotton air filter which I picked up in a clearence sale.

Rear sub frame, crash bars and some other parts went off to my friedly loal powder coaters, frame was fine and had been coated by the previous owner but some of the bits had got the odd chip and mark. Got them back this morning so took some time to refit them together with the newly acquired Lester alloys and a drum brake bevel box for lower geaaring.

Wheels were shod this afternoon with a new pair of Brigestone 45's, I ditched the original tyres as they were old enough to legally buy a drink in a bar and had seen better days.

Bevel box is a 37/11 ratio compared to the bikes original 33/11. RS was geared for a top speed of 120 mph and to be honest this is not what I'm after. The lower gearing should make things interesting on the acceleration front and keep the bike on the powerband in real world riding. Box came from a60/6 with 33k on it so no wear on the cogs and a straight fit to the RS shaft and swing arm.

Bike came with a rear disc but as I wanted to change the bevel drive thought I'd take the opporunity to switch to a drum rear having heard it was superior to a disc. Lighter to and more in keeping with the look I want from the bike.

Will be fitting a pair of Ohlins shocks to the bike as soon as they arrive with the supplier, the originals are working but showing their age and I'm just a sucker for Ohlins. :blast

Bodywork has arrived and I'm well impressed with the quality and fit, won't post photos until its fitted, would'nt want to totally bore the collective. :D

Watch this space. :P

Used the phone for these pictures, qualities not good but you get the idea, tank and seat unit in place to get an idea of how she will look.

Before anyone says anything, she won't be white when shes finished! :D

Well things are progressing (yes I know I said this was for next year but I need to get the bodywork fitted before it goes off to the painter) so a bit of an update and some details of the Flatracer kit.

All of the bodywork has been fitted apart from the screen which is just sitting there to get an idea of what it will all look like.

Tank fitted straight on first time, no adjustments needed and all the mounts matched up perfectly. The kit is designed for twin shock bikes but can be used with mono versions if you use the twin shock tank mounts. Just to clarify it won't fit to a GS, not that anyone would even consider such a thing.

Seat unit needed a bit of fine tuning to match it up to the bike, simple case of trimming the inside with a Dremel, took about 20 minutes and slips on easily using the inside of the main frame tube and an existing bracket on the rear sub frame. Seat cushion is high quality IMPO, nice detailing with the stitching and the alloy trim strip a nice touch.

Quality of the mouldings are excellent and the service from Flatracer has been second to none, great back up and always ready to answer any questions and provide support on the project.

Will keep posting as things progress. :augie

Thanks Roger, you've answered the questions about Flatracer that I was going to ask you! It looks well, my frame etc. is just about to go to the powder coaters and the engine and box to Sleaford when we've finished moving him!

Lester wheels - You'll soon be on 1st name terms with your bearing supplier. :D

Well, I for one like the Lesters. Don't forget if you go with the cafe racer theme you are going to have to tune her up a bit to avoid being overtaken by the odd glacier here and there if you leave it stock! I also know a nice German lady that will help out for the inevitable "cafe Racer" aches and pains, no......calm down, not like that, more like the lady assistant of Dr Evil. Took me two days to recover last time but cured me of any thoughts of gardening in case I put my back out again.:thumb2

Finally got all the rear sets on, bodywork fitted and the fairing drilled and bolted to the new spider. Not got the engine sorted yet as the heads are not doe back from SED until next week, as has been said this is going to be something for 2010 but buying a kit makes the transformation pretty simple as does having a decent donor bike which has aleady had the frame powder coated.

Replacement bevel box from a 1983 R80RT has been fitted together with the same bikes speedo unit to allow for the change of ratios from 33/11 to 37/11. While the original bike had a rear disc I've changed over to a drum to fit the Lester wheels. From what I've read about the rear disc on these bikes the drum system is the one to have, which is nice . :P

Got the bike outside for the first time, gave me the chance to stand back and see what she looked like. Tiny compared to The Storm but I love the proportions of the new bodywork.

Will strip the plastics off next week and get them to the painters. Roll on 2010! :bounce1
