I'm changing my standard GS double seat to the Adv single seat. I've got all the bits and started the change over today.

Come across a problem and would v. much appreciate some help and advice.

As you know the standard GS has the seat lock and helmet lock separate whereas the Adv has one lock that does both.

I've got the two locks as in pictures below, but want to take the lock out of the one and put it in the other. Is it possible to do that? I can't see how to get the lock out?

Also, does the lock barrel fit straight into the ADv fitting? Doesn't look like it to me, and I suspect something's missing from the ADv fitting? (see second photo)

Help very much appreciated please!!

Thanks

Will

It is so so simple to remove any lock barrel on a GS in 5 seconds without any damage, i've shown quiet a few people on here how easy which they will confirm, but i can't post on a public forum how to do it.

Hi Steptoe, I knew you'd have the knowledge, and appreciate the logic in not posting the solution on here! Looking at my second photo, do you think there's a part missing from the Adv Lock? The last metal 'ring' seems to be floating around like it should have something in the centre. Could I be really cheeky and ask if I could post both bits to you, and you could do it for me? (and bill me obviously)

R1100GS service manual tells this with a picture how to remove lock barrel.
Page 402

• Remove helmet lock.
• Use screwdriver to lever out inside cover.
• Remove spring and retaining hook.
• Press retaining lug on lock barrel down into
housing and remove lock barrel with key.
• Lubricate the new lock barrel with
Shell Retinax A.
• Insert lock barrel until retainer engages.
• Install in the reverse order of work.

There is no need to remove anything, you don't even need the key or any tools, just one small item :D

So would you do mine for me please Steppers? And see earlier post about possibly missing part?

stumped!

Well I still can't see how to do it... and I don't want to knacker it! Is there no chance you'd do it for me Mr Steptoe? If not, I'll have to go to Pidcock's and see if they'll do it, but that's a pain.

Eureka!

I've done it! How satisfying is that! Thanks Timolgra for the message although mine appears to be a bit different to what you described. Anyway, as has been suggested, no special tools needed at all, although it's best with the key as well, as this avoids little springs flying out and disappearing... well one did, and took half an hour to find!

It is incredibly simple, and in my case, the problem was me not realising that something was 'moveable' which I thought wasn't.

Be glad to help anyone who needs to do this in the future, but as Steptoe wisely said.. it's best not explained in full on an open forum.

Thanks again to those that helped.

I don't even need a key and with the lock in place as normal and in one piece and i'll remove it undamaged so it can be put back in place.

The security on BMW's is a bit of a joke if you know what you're doing, that's why i always advise using a large lock and chain.
