Long Way Round Animosity?

Is there animosity from "true" GS enthusiasts towards GS owners who've been spurred into the fray after seeing LWR?

Personally I can't stand any of the LWR, Race 2 Dakar, LWD stuff. Charley Boorman irritates me for no good reason and Ewan McGregor is far better as a young Obi Wan....all in my opinion of course :augie

Not sure what a 'true' GS enthusiast is either but whatever your motivation for getting a GS and joining the site, welcome :D

I must be a poser, coz I traded in a ducati 996 for a GS - but had to get the adventure. Now that was before I'd seen or heard of LWR.

Now I've got the bike (had it for 4 years) I'd certainly consider buggering off for a while, and just seeing where I ended up.

I take my hat off to Charlie and Ewan for showing us how accessible places can be, even with a lot of support, they still had to get off their lardy arses and just do it.

Ted Simon / Jupiters travels. Fantastic story, mega trip, no support:bow:bow:bow Respect.

Just wish I had the balls to escape from the treadmill.

Just for the record I just seen an advert on the tv announcing that the LWD new series will be starting soon on bbc2, hubby says I am sad and that you all probably knew that anyway :hide

Interesting point .. I am not a fan of the LWR corporation .. my only animosity towards people buying the bike is the fact that my residuals have gone through the floor. On the other hand .. 1200GSA will become much cheaper too :D

Most people don't talk to other people in London anyway, so who cares. Buy a 1200GSA .. keep it nice and clean ... sell it on to someone like me at a big discount after a year ... sorted :D

looking forward to the series, and Nippy Norman says the book is in the post...

Not sad IMHO :) The long way Round/Down may have had a load of support vehicles but so what?

Who'd not jump at the chance of doing what they did?

My two penneth :augie

i must admit

I agree with the comments so far, if onkee won konobbee, and charlie boy had asked me to tag along, i would have bitten their right arms off.
Lets face it lads,it takes some balls to go and do what they did, support vehicles or not,(Ted Simon ....respect) personally i cant wait for the LWR, two weeks is all i can muster away from the family, with 3 teenage kids, the mortgage from hell, and a very biker co-operative wife.
So if Ewan and Charlie are passing, they can share a crate of beers with me anytime!!:bow and one for Ted Simon:bow, and one for the Mondo Enduro crew!:bowtop Geesas!!!..
if they all turn up, i might need a trip to the offy!!!

I would say there's more towards those who have just watched the series then gone out and bought the whole package (including touratech farkles, twat suit, GS boots, tour x etc etc) then ride to the local cafe once a month , spouting bollox that they heard on the LWR progs.

I couldn't agree more:clap

ANIMOSITY????

:thumb2Who gives a flying F##K where you first got introduced to these magnificent flying machines, its not like riding a bike its a totaly different experience that only you the Pilot will ever understand.:thumb2
Nearly new, low mileage examples aplenty they obviously didn't get it:blast, i must admit it didn't happen over night for me but wheyhey:bounce1:bounce1:bounce1, am i glad i stuck with it.
Its great watching somebody else riding the same type of motorcycle as the one you own and cherish, regardless who they are or what they have got, the LWR i've watched it a million times its brilliant. The long way down? looking forward to it:beerjug: few beers watching something in the comfort of my own home about the few things in life which give me the most pleasure, thinking about the next time i'm going to open my garage door and put that silly 'forget everything else' grins:) on my face, i'm of out on my GS.........:thumb2:bounce1:thumb2:bounce1

No bad mouthng KTM ( I lust after one to go with the GS) But it would have been interesting to see how well KTMs would have held together. I know the BM's fell to bits, but theyre not designed for that much weight in the panniers.
Charlie and Obey one Rule:thumb2

The KTM's must be alright cos that polish bunch of nutters did poland to Magadan and back on'em and the pictures show the bikes in reasonable shape.

it's something like motosiberia.com or .pl can't pronounce the name of the chap but they's proper hardcore biker nutters...

just get out for a spin wi the irish crew..ive never even heard anybody mention lwr/lwd we are all bikers and the important thing is you ride a;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

BIKE

ps if you're ever up north give us a shout:aidan

I recently met a guy from Europe who had bought a KTM in Denver to ride through Mexico. He was en-route in Santa Fe, New Mexico, after 18 trips back to the dealer with various mechanical problems. Said he chose the KTM because he thought a BMW would be too boring.

Get a life - be a Tosser, not a tosser!

That's what needs to be said to all the people out there that take the view of riding GS's mean you wanna be Charley or Ewan clones (there is a few however).

I think it has to be said, they have done a massive job in promoting adventure motorcycling to the wider audience - and had a bloody good time - so well done lads!

For me, I always fancied a Super Tenrere back in the day, and when i went to change this time, the trail bike fever got me.

I have had loads of sports bikes, and did less than a few thousand miles a year on em, changed to a GS - done 10000 miles this year, met loads of mates, riden round Europe doing 6 countries along the way, and am going to Italy next year on my baby.

Don't think I would have been doing that if I was still tooling about on the blade.

Ironically, most crap you get comes from the Rossi wanabees, on their jap crotch rockets with the loud cans and dayglo leathers!

God forbid if Rossi ever did a TV series eh?

So really, if you want to be an individual, ride what the hell you want and dont worry about what others think - please yourself, and remember, when the jap bike riders are crippled after 80 miles or have dropped it, or are trying to stop it rusting away over winter, GS'ers keep on rolloing and having a bloody good laugh :)

Heres to us

I've never found any anomoesty towards me or however it's spelt, just be glad you live in a country that's free so you can buy what you want and wear what you want. Plenty of places where you can't do that or get shot at for waering the wrong colours. As for the as I would call it banter re Boorman and co. It's part and parcel of being famous apparently if you put you head above others expect incoming fire.

Why did I get a GS well my dad had a really old BM and I liked the shape. As for the twat jacket as it seems to be called, yup got one of those as well as other jackets and I particularly like to wear the R2 when I've cleaned the bike. For no other reason than if you judge books by their covers your not doing'em justice...but then you may have me pegged! DOH:blast

As for what LWR LWD LWU or even LWTTM (longway to the moon incase your wondering) has done for biking it's all good according to BMW cos they flog a few more bikes and and stuff which keeps the brand alive and people in jobs.:thumb better that than the alternative, I do think the old hardcore GS'ser are turning into old ladies if worried by a couple of presenters. So people should not be put off and no matter what your adventure if it's escaping once a month to the cafe or riding solo to the moon and back.

Just get out there be safe and have a brilliant time which you will on any of the new modern bikes they all good while running and all crap when broken down.

PS LWR LWD etc is a brand and it's franchised to entertain and make money anyone who thinks otherwise is sadly living on the moon which can be seen however you want it as again it's a free country

on a personal note I do dislike mr. Boorman for the simple fact I was asked to approach him for a project he said he was keen to help and interested, I explianed it was a fee paying gig worth about 1K for less than 2 hours of his time and he said great. I explained this to client who then blamed me for not getting him as he infomed his PA to send me kiss off/ dear john email. ******!

I have similar reservations to you, and having taken the plunged and spunked all my money on this new GS I can say I am very pleased.

Came to work on it the first time today, and of everyone who's commented, about half have asked questions such as "is that the same bike that those two went round the world on". Well I just say sort of as they used Adventures and what not. :o

Anyways the point is if you are just following the trend you will move on to something else in a year or two. If you stick with it for longer than that, it obvioulsy runs deeper for you. :thumb

I go back a few years before LWR.

Spain, on the way to portugal, 1980 :D

And a real adventurer i met in Northern spain. No TouraTat in those days :D
