I like the old days when protection meant a nice bomber jacket with white trainers, that's sub zero cool. Now it's body armour and spare back protector just incase. I love the blokes luggage system how much stuff is he taking along....

You can be the nicest the person in the world and some people will still try to pull you down.
So do what you want. Buy the bike the want and put what-ever toys you want on it. If you never go off pavement or never even ride it. Who cares. If it makes you happy, than go for it.
Life is to bloody short, so enjoy what time you have and while you have your health.

I pay a guy to ride my GS to rack up the milage so I look like a Hard Core rider.

To answer the question directly - I have never heard any animosity to LWR-inspired Gs'ers and it do not beleive it is widespread in other parts.
I think that GS'ers who ride off-piste look pityingly on those who only ride on-road and think, "they don't know what they're missing!". No animosity there.
LWR opened new horizons for many bikers.
As for the KTM vs BMW debate. KTMs reluctance was far more to do with the perceived skills, fitness and preparation of the riders + back-up team than the merits of the machine. Also the known hazards of the terrain would have worried their seasoned expert. I ride a BMW and am convinced that a KTM would have made it given the same back-up.
KTM made a very bad call on that one though!

I got a fair bit of good natured slagging off friends after I got my GS (and protests that I bought it based on its performance and versatility fell on deaf ears) but no ones going to alienate you. I'd say that a lot of people who would otherwise have bought a sports bike and the matching leathers have bought GS's based on LWR as they are posers but another way of looking at it is that LWR has got a lot of people off pointless sports bikes which they would have ridden for a few years and then sold and gone back to the volvo as its 'far too dangerous' and onto a much more practical bike which is more likely to make them life long bikers.
Whatever - if you want one buy one, you are unlikely to regret it (Cue endless debate about the 'unreliability' of 1200s)
