:nenau I have the original Long Way Round dvd which I enjoyed a lot. I see the new version has 3 more eposodes and is about 4 hours longer. Has anyone seen both versions and is it worth getting the new one or is it just a gimmick to get more sales?? I don't mind buying it again if it is worth it.

Here in Chicago, the release date is something like Dec.13. I believe its a copy of the series that ran on television.

They ran it on Sky Travel up to a month or so ago - the extra three programs added a bit more to preparation and planning (which was reasonably interesting) and a lump to the North American leg of the trip (which got a bit boring). There's also supposed to be an extended "one year after" interview.

Is it worth getting? Well if you have watched five and a bit hours of people on motorbikes you might get a bit more from eight and a bit hours... ;)

There's also an "illustrated" (coffee table) version of the book.

I've had it for a couple of weeks, basically the same disc 1 & 2 , plus an extra disc covering the USA - Canada - USA in more detail plus the 1 yr on etc. Don't think it's anything like an extra 4 hours though.

I watched the DVD and, in a moment of boredom on a Sea France ferry, bought the book (in paperback). In reality, I found the book much less informative that the DVD and, in some cases, it didn't marry up with the recording.

Can't comment on the longer DVD though. Sorry mum.

Having watched both I suppose that its not really worth buying the 3 disc set, unless you MUST see the extra footage. On the new version: Disc 1 has a few extra little bits to a couple of the episodes; disc two is pretty much as per original; but disc 3 has much more in the way of extras, including: USA footage; one year on; Claudio's "incident"(the consequences of which were not mentioned in either the original DVD OR the book!!); Jimmy's story (??!!...why this was included escapes me?), etc.
The 3 disc set is roughly the same price as the original from some places, so if you are looking to buy the DVD, it makes sense to buy the 3 disc set anyway, but if you have the original.....I suppose, ya pays yer money....

Have to agree with Jedi re: the book / film interaction, although it did contain some interesting stuff not shown on film.

Still, after saying all that....and I know this is VERY, VERY SAD, but, I've read the book several times AND, watched both versions of the DVD far too many times to admit...like I said..I admit it...I AM SAD!!. I suppose it's some sort of voyeurism (sp?), and I'm living my around the world fantasy through these THREE (lets not forget Claudio rode almost as many miles AND had to film it). what the hell...for less than £13, go out and buy it, and draw your own conclusions. LOL

Thanks for the replies, I think I will leave getting the dvd for now and wait until I see it reduced in the future. I am reading the book at the moment and after one third I am enjoying it as much as the dvd which I have watched twice and intend to read again after I finish the book.

Haven't managed to see the new version in any of my local shops.. I blamed getting the original DVD for getting into bikes in the first place... I'm just too soft and wimpy for a full on 1150GSA... so after a couple months going from pedals to R1200GS... I'm planning my own Long Way Round (the local B roads).
