Until recently, spoked wheels collapsing has never been a problem.
Surely this must be as a result of inferior materials being used??
Bingo! It’s all about the profit.![]()
Final check of my 2018 GSA today before a tour down to Prague next Tuesday
Found loose spokes in the front wheel so contacted my dealer, Alan Jefferies
Asked me to take it straight over and they found 4 loose spokes on the front and 3 on the back.....the back wheel was replaced at 6.5k due to 11 loose spokes!........bike now on 9.8k
Al the spokes in both wheels have been re torqued and should be fine although I was advised to check daily!
12k service when I get back and any loose spokes = new wheel.
Love riding the bike but if I can't trust the wheels could be time to get rid.
Trouble is 'What to get!'
Mike
My Yamaha S10 has done x5 the mileage with no issues (except a loose battery terminal caused by me and a misfire due to dirty fuel)

Clutching at straws posting a 4 year old news item there Shaun.
This issue with BMW has been going on for a long time now, and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel.
A wheel that disintegrates is terrible. Looking at the pictures, both front end and rear has taken damage. Though, I'm not able to say if rear damage is the result from the collapsing front.
But take at look at the picture from the front hub. The spokes have been pulled out, practically shredding off the collar of the nuts.
This does not make sense. I have seen how much beating the spoked wheels can handle (even the LC), and this type of damage from just riding on a flat surface?
I do not doubt that the accident happened, but some how it does not make sense. I get the feeling that we have not heard the whole story.
I have had spoked bikes aging from -70's and on, and spokes have never been an issue. It's a fairly simple system where there is not much that can go wrong.
I will not speculate to what went wrong. But to put it this way. I intend to keep riding my spoked bikes without staying awake at night...
Well the very first thread we seen was the guy on the motorway, his rear totally collapsed, he was quite loaded up though, is that maybe part of the problem, weight on wheels, and I would imagine also if the guy in Israel was off into the desert, he was loaded like a camel, full of water fuel, and extra handbags etx, and might just have hit a rock, who knows, and given this is in Israel, the bloke will not be giving his money away freely.![]()
Phwooar man! Don't open the stereo-typing door!!
Spokes on the early 1200's seem good enough, believe they were made by Behr, mine have 42k miles on them all tinging, no tonging

No luggage apart from tailbag. Looks like AT is popular, notice nobody has any luggage.

What I find strange in this one, is front and rear failure,
I am sure that BMW has engaged somebody to do a test to destruction...
they're customers . It's called Ze BETA test program

Had a spoke on my rear wheel vanish...as in completely vanish (2016 bike). New one fitted and no problems since. I think it must have been made of water soluble high tension rice paper...
