Hi.
I have tried everything from the basics to the slightly more advanced but perhaps i am missing something.
I know its a big scope question but any suggestions would help.
I am not a complete fool on the PC so have tried many things but there is something i may not have tried
Thankyou for your time:)

Can anyone help?

tick in a Mute box somewhere?

double click the speaker icon in the system tray to open the volume controls & check that all the sliders are up as well.

Do you have a separate sound card?
Is it seated properly? They can fall out if box is knocked.
If you have a microphone plug it in. It will show its working on the screen the microphone icon gets )) around it when it it is receiving sound. This may give a clue as to whether the car is working without opening the pc box.
You can disable the card if it is not working and revert to the sound on the motherboard

Are all the "sound" things ok
(open control panel - open sound and audio devices )

If playing through windows media centre the volume slider can mute the sound even though the XP volume control says not muted. On my home PC they are linked and move together on my laptop they appear to be acting independently!!??
