Lost Swinging Arm Rubber Venting Plug

Well after BMW investing all that research and expense solving a problem that was never a problem for any of my 20 GS’s I’ve owned, it’s dropped out and disappeared, well that worked didn’t it.Thought mine might be ok as it came already installed by the fatherland , how wrong I was. Mates has gone as well .
New one being fitted and this time glued in at my request by my dealer.

I'm checking mine every day but it will eventually fall of, for sure. Next time I'll ask for superglue as well.

My mate thinks dealer secured his replacement with some sort of thread lock, whatever it is it’s seems to have worked and secured the plug
 
Most likely not lost, but hiding inside the swing arm tunnel. These rubber devices have a shoulder on them to prevent them falling out but no shoulder to prevent them from being very very easily pushed up into the swing arm tunnel. How do I know? Guess! Mine is now firmly glued in place. At least it affords an opportunity to lubricate the rear splines.

I had mine done a few weeks ago.

I mentioned it to my mate, and he kneeled down to have e look. Then he reached to touch it in order to get a sense og the firmness of the rubber.
The venting plug promptly disappeard, and is now spending the winter in 'a place where the sun never shines'.

Coming spring, I'll have a look, either using glue or 3D print a small insert that will add some pressure against the walls
 
At the risk of inflaming the forum with this comment, I have declined their kind offer a a free 'enhancement' (Which apparently cannot be done at the same time as a service - I know, its bollocks) and will be dropping the final drive out once a year and doing the normal. I am an old troll and simply don't want to change. :rob
 
Mine came with the bung fitted at factory, washing the drive and the bung went inside
Dealer tech said he'd had a few and that he had glued the bung in so I had that on the replacement
Still there and solid
Only has a flange on inside

Frankly. I think this drainpug action from BMW is a shot in the blind.
It's a bit like fixing a leaky roof by drilling a hole in the basement..

I know riders that had their shaft well and truly rusted, yet there was not a drop of water anywhere inside the swingarm.

I suspect the corrotion is a condensation issue, and when the bike is parked on the centerstand, all the tine droplets flows down wards to the rear drive. The shaft, not in any way protected against anything, starts to rust, and when the splines are not lubed the show is on.

I think the best solution would be to paint or whatever the entire shaft, and lubricate the splines. The drain will prevent a leaky seal from flooding the swingarm. On the other hand, drilling the whole will leave an open area for corrosion buildup inside the newly drilled hole.

Drive shafts are now painted to give them some protection but the older original shafts were not and rusted badly.........

Same here.
 
I've done the recall and still will be dropping the final drive once a year to check and lube. I just don't trust the design.
 
When they added my drain plug, they lubed the splines, apparently there was some water inside - I have never ridden this bike through a river or flood so I guess it must have come from either condensation or got in there when washing the bike.
 
Cheapest possible "fix" for what is a serious issue on all post 2014 lc bikes.The sealing for the shaft tunnel is poor and the shaft material is scheisse.Accountants 1, Engineers 0.
 
My bike is late 2021 so came with the vent hole and plug - I must have pushed the original into the housing when washing it as I just had a hole when I first looked. Got a replacement from Bahnstormer which is now inside the housing as well during washing! Bahnstormer have been told and tell me that they are both soft plastic so BMW aren’t worried about them bouncing around inside. They also want to leave the hole empty as they say there’s no need to put another plug in

Can’t say I blame you when the best, hi-tech solution BMW can come up with is a dodgy, half-baked rubber bung that disappears when you touch it or even don’t touch it!
 
Is it possible to just stick a bit of wire through the bung just long enough to stop it falling in? I haven’t had mine done so haven’t seen it for real yet.
