"Lost" torx key...

Hoorah! found it!

What I needed was one of these:

...which my mate suggested. Yes, a miniature Honda headlamp, surgically fitted into my cranium. Brilliant!

(Actually an Energizer LED headband torch, £7 from Dyas.)

Then I used the CSI method, ie a dark garage, and lo, the Force led me to it, somewhere in here:

After that, it was the frustrating job of getting the bodywork to look like it fitted :eek

Many thanks for all your helpful (?) suggestions. :D

I still can't see it. :blush

Would someone please be kind enough to point it out.

Was working on my R1150GSADV and lost the nut that held the gas tank. Looked and looked and looked, never could see the thing. Bought a new one, and moved on with life.

Skip ahead a couple years, and I'm changing the clutch out on the beast. Pull the airbox, and what do I see laying on top of the transmission. The fo*kin' nut just sitting there like it was at home.

As long as it's not "in" something, I wouldn't worry about it. There's not too many things it would effect on the outside of the engine.

One of these days when you're changing plugs, it'll be sitting there waiting for you...

edit: I thought you were talking about a torx bit, not the entire wrench. Glad you found it.

Another approach

There is another way to think about this problem of dropped pieces which fail to appear below the bike. I was putting the little plastic disks back on top of the front shocks on my 650GS when I dropped one. There was a sound like a muted pinball machine ... sort of plink, plank, plunk. Nothing appeared below the bike. I looked everywhere, got out the flashlight, etc. No luck.

So I thought, where is the worst place it could be? I stuck my finger in between the fan blades (engine off, obviously) and felt at the bottom of the fan shroud. There it was! Repeated the process with a bit of masking tape wrapped on the finger and retrieved the part.

So maybe we should always look first in the nasty places?

Mike
