Low Fuel Warning

R1100 GS 1995 , 87.000 miles on clock

usualy get 140, 150 miles to low fuel warnin light comes on.

i get around another 40 miles or so , i usualy fill up 180 miles, i put in around 18 to 19 liters , so have a bit left in the tank..

i ride back roads n motorways every day.

once ran low in Hungary and had to ride up to 220 miles till i found a petrol station, i still had a few liters left in tank:thumb2

my fuel gauge has a mind of its own, when its down to one bar it some times jumps back up to two.

when the last bar disappears and red light comes on , i know im on my last 30 , 40 mile fuel reserve.

After the dealer replaced my fuel filter at a regular service, the bars on the meter NEVER go to full - it always stops at least one from the top - the tank is full, obviously. This is because they obviously moved or knocked something when replacing the filter. It's not a huge problem as the trip meter still tells me that I am ready for a refill and the fuel light still seems to come on at the right time. Don't tlet the dealers get silly money out of you for this type of thing ...

Cheers,

Nick

Disconnect the block connecter under the tank behind the black plastic cover, spray it with contact cleaner and pop it back. Might show full when full then. Mine doesn't show full when full when it needs a clean. Its a common Gs Foible:D

I rode my 1150 twice this last wk takin it til the light came on but my light never came on until all the bars had gone
Was gonna ask how many miles can I expect to do once the light comes on but think its been answered here, 30 miles yes ??

As a reply to my original post, thanks Summer for reminding me, mine does the same as yours . I rode it last week , all the bars disappeared and after about ten miles the yellow warning light came on . Rode it for another five miles befor filling up . 19.5 Litres . So 2.5 letres left, about 20-25 miles . Cheers all for your help and suggestions . Frontbrake

I have been reading your posts with interest as i have only recently bought an 1150GSA and although a bigger tank the scenarios are similar in that the light comes on at one bar and about 4 litres remain.
I have changed the filter recently and noted that the sender (guage) units are very delicate and could easily be damaged to give false readings if fitted by ham fisted mechanics especially non franchised ones that are unfamiliar with these models.

For me the light comes on when the last bar has gone. That is usually at 195-200 miles.

I've noticed that all but the top two bars are lit up after 100 miles (half a tank) then they disappear very quickly over the next 100 miles. I don't care so long as it's consistent.

My gauge has had a stuck float for eithteen months so yesterday I decided to fix it once and for all, removed all the gubbins and tweaked the arm a little, refitted it all, inverting the tank I can hear the arm bouncing off the upper stop :thumb2
Righting the tank I can again hear the float arm bouncing on the bottom stop:thumb2
refit tank
remove tank and cure fuel leak, note. The "grown" O ring can be shrunk back to normal size by placing on top of a hot kettle for one hour, used O rings shrink to a smaller size than original and will leak
refit tank
Pour one gallon of fuel in, gauge now shows no bars and the orange light is on, the next step will be to ride to local small attended service garage and add fuel incrementally noting gauge readings as I fill up.

Fuel gauge

Reset your speedo trip when fiiling up do a test with a spare can onboard and see how many miles you get before it runs out, Much more accurate than relying on the gauge. Got over 316 out of my 1150,ad venture tank without running out and with a lower ration bevel box on the back.
