Anyone know of a dealer that has a "lowered "1200 demo bike. Having completed a 7 hour round trip to the Edinburgh Bike Show specifically to sit on one to find the BMW stand with no lowered bike left me a little vexed!

hi,we have one down here in cornwall a very long way to go,all i can say is i have just bought one with the lower frame and seat,i have a 29 inch inside leg and brilliant,i tried without the lowered frame and it was ok but i needed a bit more,so yes i am now happy with my purchase.

Thanks for your reply Paul. I am a little taller than you but seek the security of a lower bike making stationary / pedalling work that much easier with a fully loaded bike and a very important person on the back. My VIP finds climbing onto the back of the 800 GS we own challenging.
I do not really want to pay a shed load of wanga on a bike without a trial run.
I am fascinated by the fact there are so few lowered demo bikes about, I think BMW are missing a golden opportunity to expand the numberof GS customers by including the "vertically challenged". I believe Vines at Guildford have just sold their lowered Demo so I will continue searching and hopefully find one closer to the Arctic Circle!
Met forecast for the week is good for Scotland I hope it is the same in the South West allowing you to enjoy your new bike,

At 5'7" and an inside leg of 29" I find that the low seat option is fine even for peddling the bike around at low speeds. Even the original seat on the low setting was okay (just).
See if you can find a 1200 with the low seat option and I think you'll be okay (many dealers will have a low seat somewhere in the showroom that they can swap onto a demo bike in a couple of minutes).

How comfortable is the low seat? I have one on my 800 GS and it is like sitting on a toothpick after 45 minutes. I now use an AIRHAWK for any long rides which raises you at least an inch further up (but allows a full day in the saddle) hence the thoughts about a lowered version.

I have a lowered model. It comes with the low seat as standard which is like sitting in a wooden hammock. Changed it for the standard seat which only lifts it by about 0.5'' and it's a much more comfortable ride. I think if you specify the standard seat you can have it as a no cost option.
Had a demo ride from Ocean Plymouth.
If you're anywhere near me you could check mine out.....

Billywhizz thanks very much for the kind offer. I will sit tight for a while and see if anything nearer home turns up. I have tried e-mailing BMW Mottorad head office for details of lowered bikes in the UK and the silence has been deafening! A good tip about the seat I will bear that in mind if and when i order a new bike.
The lowered frame has 158mm front and 171mm rear suspension travel, though less than the ordinary GS, this is still more than many sports bikes.
I can’t say that I have noticed any problem even 2 up with luggage. It may be a problem with serious off road riding, but I have never had a problem.

I did demo a standard bike with the lowered seat and the suspension travel didn't seem to be much different - don't know about off road though.
One difference between the GS and sports bikes that I've found is that the GS is easier (for me anyway) to get leant right over. Maybe it's the upright riding position. So depending on what you've ridden before and your riding style, you might find the clearance is worth checking out.

Thanks everyone for your tips. I am heading to Inverness on Saturday to try a normal GS with a lowered seat with my AIRHAWK on top. I have asked the dealer to try and persuade BMW HQ to send a lowered suspension bike up but I will be very surprised if that happens. This will probably be my last bike as I move into the "mature" stage of life and I need to get the choice size/weight absolutely correct . As an aside this fuel starvation problem does concern me, I thought the company would have sorted that out on thr 2010 model -have to bear it in mind on the test run.
Have you spoken to Motorrad in Glasgow. They had a lowered 1200GS in the showroom last year. Certainly easy to plant both feet on the ground (30 inch inside leg). General consensus was that the lowered bike was also supposed to handle better than stock due to the slightly lower centre of gravity.
I ended up buying a standard GS with lowered seat and using my Airhawk on top. Found a Kahedo (Touratech) extra low seat on e-bay and this is now on the bike as it is more comfortable thant he BMW low seat.

. I was lucky to go and purchase from oceans plymouth an early 06 that had been lowered with wilber shocks The bike originally came from Cardiff, Im 5,7" It also has the lower seat on it. If you are ever down here mate ,you can have a go .They Are out there

I have a sargent seat on my low model
hours of fun and NO sore bum....
hours of fun and NO sore bum....Hmmmmmmmmmm Im 5'8 and shrinking with 29" inside leg and ride an Adventurer with lowered springs (nice purple ones!) and standard GSA seat and dont have a problem does this make me a mutant??
