Iv'e trawled thru' the tech pages for an answer to this question but to no avail, so here goes.
The GS being a dry clutch uses car type engine oil ( Castrol GTX or the like ) and being oil cooled it would be important to keep the oilways clean, so when doing an oil change does anyone use a flushing additive like Wynnes engine flush just prior to doing an oil change.
Also is there any engine oil more suitable than any other assuming the engine has done less than 12,000 miles so would not be bedded in and for gearbox and final drive oil can fully synthetic oil be used from new.
Many thanks

Take it easy these are boxers

I use GTX never thought of using engine flush. I use castrol Ep90 back of the motor and I have 43K on the clock. As the man said it the frequency of the changes that counts.
The flush probably would do no harm but I have to say after fully synthetics on jap bikes 13 quid for 5L is the business.

I'm with Black duck (????) on this. Modern oils are so good that a flush is not necessary so long as you change the oil according to the service schedule. If, however, you do feel the need for a bit more detergent in your oil, you could put some engine oil designed for a diesel engine as these have a higher detergent content to cope with the extra particulates that the diesel engine produces.

I agree with howard about diesel oil ,It's all I have ever used in my airheads, 15/40 bp vanellus I think thats what it is, I change mine every 1000 miles because I know a man down the pub, and then use it my old diesel van never had a problem with it, and it comes out like honey, lovely stuff. Diesel Oils

I would never have thought of that, and my wife has a deisel car that uses Castrol GTD+ we get it a Makro when its on offer at £8.99 per 5 L. Many thanks for the info guys.
Is it OK to use Synthetic in the gearbox & final drive ?

I only use a flushing oil if the engine has a sludge problem.

It is normal for underserviced engines to suffer this, and owners who do lots of stop-start motoring and only consider getting any work done on their cars when they go wrong are the only times I have ever used an engine flush.

I have found that it is good practice to halve the oil change intervals. I have never had ANY base engine or cam problems when doing this, and always use a good quality oil that is the right grade. Same goes for the transmission, although I would not really reccomend changing the oil in the gearbox for a synthetic one. Gearboxes are funny things and putting a synthetic oil in can actually make matters worse. Stick with the original spec. As for the axle, i'd be tempted to stick with what's reccomended.
