Hi Guys,
There were some questions regarding the dials of my R1200GS so I though I open up another fred

…I really like this one...can you provide some info on this? how difficult is to do it? where you bought it? (I mean the white colour on the dash..)

I didn’t buy the dials, I made them myself.

All you need is an old plastic folder (or a see-through thin plastic), a scanner, corel draw and someone who can print on professional vinyl (every signwriter today has a digital printer, it wouldn’t cost the world) I happen to have a signwriter in the family where I printed my dials.

  • You scan the originals to have the size,
  • Then using Corel Draw outline them. Speak to the signwriter, there are certain colors you can use where this vinyl printer can actually cut along. This way you can control what will be cut and what not.
  • Create your design, everything is possible. The camo below is just printed on white vinyl.
  • Once you got the design, make a copy of it and create one the determains the light-block layer (in the pics below you see the design layer and a black light block layer).
  • Once you got these done, go to your signwriter and get them printed.
  • With the printerouts in hand, stick them with soapy water on the see-through plastic of a folder and cut it carefully. Make sure the light-block layer sits in the right spot…
  • At the end cover the sides of the needles otherwise they’d light up the whole thing

Here are some previous designs I made up:

On my page in the bmw diary there is an entry from the 13. April 2009. It shows how I made them… here are some of the photos.

Hey Marc, as you've already done the dial templates, any chance you could post the corel files for the dakar one, just to save a few of the steps of scanning, outlining etc.

I know I'll need to do an mph version but that's cool.

Cheers

PS also found this on ebay. R1200 Dials

Here are the Corel X4 Files:

The RPMer is 3.5MB and the Speedo 6.1MB.

Marc - those are really cool!! Well done. :clap Is it a big / complex job removing the speedo's & replacing etc? Any issues with seals etc? Really like the idea of white clocks - and also having mph indicated as well if riding in the UK etc.

top work Marc :thumb

for those that are going to download the coral files for there own MPH dials won't the numbers/markings be in the wrong place ? so would it not just be as easy to create your own from scratch ?

If you are admiring at your dials whilst riding, its gonna end in tears.

If you are staring at your dials when stationary, you need a fekkin' life. Or a Harley.

Sad. Very sad.

It's not sad at all. People spend £££ putting all kinds of irrelevant touratwat crap on their bikes that many will never see the benefit or need of. That's bloody sad.

It's a fun little novelty. I wouldn't bother with it particularly, but it made me chuckle, good luck to ya Marc :beerjug:

Yup. All those knobs littering their GS's with touratech stuff that will never get used (and silly dials) instead of using them...

Very in bad nice work mate!

If I may add something, don't forget that white "hands" won't show much on a white background, which is problematic in bad light or at night...

(as I found out in scary circumstances!)

I bought model kit paint, painted the needles bright red and re-assembled everything!

I tried in vain to order R1200S red needles but BMW never replied...
