Done a stupid thing or two.
Tried to update maps so have Garmin Express tried to install all of Europe but wouldn't fit, so installed central and eastern Europe. Found therefore that no longer had UK.
Thought that way round would be install larger mini sd card and try again, trouble was express wouldn't let me install map and just stated that map was latest update, so thought, delete map from garmin, once this was done, Garmin express still stated that no update reqd, checked unit found no maps now at all, not good.
Tried all sorts of things with mygarmin and Garmin Express all to no avail, guess need to contact support and probably pay for new map, unless someone out there knows different.

Thinking wish had brought Tom Tom

Thanks

Exactly the same has happened to me last week, after owning the 660 for 3 years I decided to treat it to an update through my apple mac so paid me 76odd quid. big mistake as I now have belgum and france but nothing else.
Dont think you will be recharged for the update but as Ive not had time to enquire with Grmin, Im just using my Iphone to navigate by.

Just a fekkin frustrated numpty now, as the Tomtom updater was piss easy, this ones very close to being flattened by an extremely heavy lump hammer

Hopefully someone much cleverer will guide us hey????:rob

Don't use Garmin Express (it's shite)

Use the old Garmin MapUpdater procedure, not Express - I did the same thing, wasted about 24 hours fecking about with the download process, only to have up-to-date maps but only for central Europe... if you're using a Windows pc then this is the link:

http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe

Thereafter it easy - sloooooow, but easy!

For Mac - http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg

Lots of useful stuff at https://forums.garmin.com/

Thanks for that i'll give it at try, although persevered a bit last night with it, managed to appear to reload just the central and eastern europe maps, but when tried unit, it lists addresses now but when you try and view a map with the roads showing all you get is a blank screen.

I think when i deleted the file with maps in other important stuff went with it.

Not too hot with IT me.

I will try the link to reload again, But i think the unit may need a visit to Garmin.

Big trip in three weeks time, wonder what turn around time will be.

Cant remember if the unit comes with a disc to reboot it with as such?

the thing doesnt seem user friendly to me.

Thanks

Rob

garminexpress has to be one of worst offerings from garmin of late. Its not consistent in its features and wont let the user change the settings on what to install and wear unless it decides too. I've had the option to install maps on PC once but I cant replicate it and now it always just installs onto Zumo (at least my SD card is big enough to get it all on ) so I need to use the old map installer to get maps onto the PC into mapsource and basecamp.
that said the support download section of the website isn't any better, tried to download a new installer for basecamp as I have a new PC , all garmin site would show was basecamp for mobile (its a win8 pc) luckily I had an old installer so used that and did an update.... Too much nanny state ideas in garmin on what best for its users.

Last time I tried to use the old updater it did the checking then handed me over to Express to update .... which means no update to the PC.
Is that what i paid a lifetime update for? I don't think so.

Nightmare

Got a new 660..

Hours & hours of trying to update..
GARMIN, if your watching.
Pay attention..
I've given up for now,

For the price of memory cards nowadays can't we just have maps straight to drive f in one easy bash.
Then update maps on pc separate..

I'm sure it will work we'll when it works tho

Maybe you ran the check for updates in "MyGarmin" - in which event, you're correct, it dumps you straight into Garmin Express (which is proven to be the ashtray on one's motorcycle, a chocolate teapot, or any other analogous epithet for "a useless pile of excrement").

You do need to run the GarminMapUpdater application which gives you all the old options, such as download to PC, etc. - largely cos it's the old software that actually works...

Think I've sorted it. After reinstalling windows i had to get the garmin stuff reinstalled.

2 problems

1. garmin express came up with error when updating the map.
Garmin support came up with this solution that worked for me

"1. Open Garmin Express.
2. Click Settings.
3. Click Saved Devices.
4. Click the device to remove from the application.
5. Click ?Remove Device?.
6. Click Accept.
7. Disconnect the device from the computer.
8. Close the Express window.

Now that the device has been removed, we will need to close the
application.

1. Right click the Garmin Express icon in the system tray (lower right
hand corner, next to the clock on your computer).
2. Click Exit.
3. On your keyboard, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
4. Click Start Task Manager (Windows XP users can skip this step)
5. Click Processes.
6. Right click ?Garmin.Cartography.MapUpdate.CoreService.exe?.
7. Click End Process.
8. Close the Task Manager.
9. Click the Windows Start icon.
10. Click Programs/All Programs.
11. Click Garmin.
12. Click Garmin Express.

The application will now launch, reconnect your Garmin device to the
computer and follow the on screen prompts to associate the device to
Express.

You should now be able to run through the map update without any issues
occurring"

2nd problem how to install the update map onto the pc. Garmin support had no answer.

The zumo had the latest map installed on the device with a memory card so when garmin express trys to install or I click reinstall a map it install to the zumo.
I disconnected the zumo remove the memory card and plugged it back in.
Start Garmin express and select reinstall maps, it then says there isn't enough memory whick make it show a different screen asking to install partial maps. At the bottom there is a box that says device. Change this to pc instead of zumo and select full coverage map. It will then install onto the pc.

Hope this helps

Mick
Did as you said, was given the option to reinstall through the older software, so installed complete Europe, all worked but no voice, looked to install a voice could not see how to retrieve standard voice and free voices and chargeable voices were all a bit crap darth vader and homer simpson etc, downloaded some american comedian / actor dan someone so at least now i have a usable sat nav. When i get back from trip in a few weeks time ill have another try.

Thanks for your help

Cheers

This information is GOLD matey , thank you. Ive been disapearing up my own arse for the last two days trying to get PC maps updated.
MAGIC :beerjug::beerjug::beerjug::beerjug:

I will apologise to start with if one of the more expert users has already provided answers to my experience already.

This Sunday, bored, so I installed the latest 2016 map on my trusty 550.. used the map installer to down load the full monty package for all countries onto an SD card (8gb)
Had to erase the earlier 2015 map to get the new one to fit - that was not easy - I eventually used Mac utilities to erase all files n the SD to recover space.

While all went well with the upgrade and install of all maps on the SD card I decided to look into why I had route planning problems with basecamp and realised that because I still had the old 2008 map and associated files in the internal memory that map was being selected for routing - - so I then bit the bullet and decided to erase all the internal files after making a copy on the PC.
However with all files removed no memory was released...
I then also tried to use Mac utilities to release the internal memory but found that I could not as attempts would fail.
So even though I removed all the files the 2gb memory still only had about 240mb free.
Also attempting to reinstall the old files back onto the internal memory failed due to insufficient memory! (oh Sh1t).

So all files now on the SD card and none on the internal memory, restarted and all came up fine - the unit must have eprom based default files which it installs automatically on start up as after restarting I found a few key files re-installed on the internal memory.
However, no voice files existed, only a USA country specific file.

So I started Garmin express and noticed it gave me the option to install country and voice files - 240mb was enough space for all the english voice varients and country files so now all working again with the boot up process now much faster.
I loaded basecamp and cleaned up the routes and favourites on PC and Garmin so now all seems fine but I would still like to know how to mange/recover the internal memory to make use of it for music files.
