Mapsource and Mac

Having clicked on chasr's linky. Thanks for that ! . it spurred me to download the conversion software.

For the last year of Mac ownership I've ran a windows PC next to the Mac purely for mapsource stuff :(

Anyway.. a couple of hours later and I seem to be able to route plan on the Mac and send it to the GPS :clap:clap:clap

I'm still navigating round the system as its different to mapsource on the PC.. its called roadtrip.

I've sorted a run out for Llangollen which has been transferred to the 2650 with no problems, and started a bit of route planning for the forthcoming european trip .....:thumb

Looks like the laptop will soon be redundant

My problem is I don't have a PC to convert the discs:(

Not sure Dave... to do what I did I had Mapsource already on the PC ... downloaded what was needed to both the PC and the Mac. It then compressed the files on the PC... I then used a memory stick to transfer the compressed file to the Mac and it seems to be working :thumb

I used to have them on the PC but that went pear shaped
so don't have access to one now. I've emailed Garmin, I'll post up what they say.:thumb

Though what Chasr is not telling you is that he planned a recent trip using Roadtrip and downloaded to his Nuvi 550.

Apparently it lead him a merry dance.

I used Mapsource and my Nuvi 550 on 1700 mile trip in March and it was fine.

I've tried Roadtrip myself but have gone back to Mapsource as it's much quicker and more reliable.

The problem is getting the CN9 on the Mac

Why is that ?

I found it very straight forward.

I've got CN9 and NT as well :

How did you do that?

I think Arsey did the same as me, and converted from PC to Mac. It's then easy to add new maps, either by download (lifetime maps) or from DVD. However, whether it's possible to install RoadTrip from scratch - without converting from PC - I don't know. You would be better off experimenting and/or talking to Garmin. Once you have an answer, it would be very helpful if you could post on the forum as it's a question that will be asked again.

Arsey mentioned problems I had with uploading routes from RoadTrip to a Nuvi 550. Even though the Nuvi 550 (think narrow-screen Zumo 660) recalculates the routes on import, it often draws additional straight lines between waypoints. Forcing an extra recalculation on the Nuvi solves the problem but, unless plenty of (dragged) waypoints are used, there is a danger that the Nuvi route won't be exactly the same as the Mapsourced/RoadTrip planned one. Importantly, I tried the same plan and import using Mapsource, and had exactly the same problem. Consequently, this is not a RoadTrip problem.

Once a few users get the new Zumo 660, and start some serious playing around with the unit, I fully expect the same issue to occur between Mapsource & the Zumo.

To summarise;

Dunno how you can move ahead without a PC. Talk to Garmin & let us know what they say.

RoadTrip doesn't cause any additional routing problems compared with Mapsource (though it is slow).

are you saying i can add maps to Road Trip directly, or do i have to do that whole PC conversion malarkey all over again?

the reason my mac is v08 and my garmin is v.09 is because i couldn't be bothered with all that just now.

it would be nice if i could just add maps direct to my mac.

You can add maps directly to RoadTrip. Normal unlock rules apply.

so you don't have to do the PC conversion thing then, even for the first maps you install?

i'll give that a go then :)

Didn't say that. I converted the first maps off Mapsource, and have added new maps directly to RoadTrip since.
