I have a Zumo 550 with 2008 mapping. All my routes are small roads, no motorways, and A roads avoided like the plague. So to plot my routes across the UK and Europe, and to fine tune them, I am having to go right down to the highest details on Mapsource at 1 mile level. That is the only way I can see enough detail to pull the routes around as I would like.

When you get right down to the detail of 2008 Mapsource all the small B roads and lanes all look the same and are in black. The point I am trying to make is that it would be better for plotting very complicated routes if there was a real difference in contrast on Mapsource between the smaller roads. So let's say a B road was orange and a lane/C road in brown (or similiar).

I wanted to know if there is any improvement in the 2010 version i.e are small roads contrasted in different colours or still all the same black colour ?

You can change the road appearrances and colours in your Garmin unit by modifying the TYP file or replacing the original with a pre-made TYP file. Do a Google search for available garmin TYP files.

Backroader:

Having had a look at my NT 2010, B roads are black lined, smaller B roads like the ones around housing estates or back roads are grey in contrast, so yes there is a difference. A roads remain yellow and A(M) and motorways remain orange. Still need to go to highest detail at 1km.

Hope this helps

Troy.

Thanks guys for your comments.
I did ring Garmin to see if there were changes to 2010 maps but they said no - or more likely they did not understand what I was getting at.

What version of Mapsource are you using?..

I use 6.15.6 and the roads are quite clear, passing the cursor over them gives the road name/number too.

My Mapsource version is 6.13.4.0.
Motorways are blue, main roads red, B roads black, lanes black although a little lighter than the B road black but hardly distinguishable.

I'm going to go onto the Garmin website to see if I can find the latest Mapsource version to view.

Hi Guys

I have recently instaled 2010 and I think its a much better version but you do still have to go right down to 1km to do fine planing of routes (which I am doing at the moment for a trip to Ireland) its a pain and its what takes the time.

Good luck
