Mapsource

Here's what you should have!

All the maps on your device should appear under "devices" - I have GB Discoverer and World Autoroute Basemap on the Montana. If you don't see the map there, I'm not sure it's available on your device.

On your 550, if you press [spanner] then Map then Map Info, what do you get?

Solved

Thanks to all for their assistance with this. In the end I called Garmin and it transpired that my unit had 'patched' maps installed on it. The solution was to replace them with genuine maps and now all is well. Now I just need to spend some time learning how to use Basecamp.

Now I just need to spend some time learning how to use Basecamp.

Personally I've found it to be one of the most user-unfriendly pieces of software I've ever used, I've gone back to plotting my routes on Autoroute Express and converting them with ITN converter to gpx files to then use in Basecamp / send to Zumo. Even then have to recalculate in Basecamp as they show up as straight lines between waypoints when imported. As long as there's enough waypoints in it all recalculates fine onto the wanted roads.

A good start to Basecamp is this tutorial http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=302389

Be interesting to hear other people's views.

if garmin fixed the hopeless search function, i'd say basecamp is better than mapsource.

actually, i'd say evenas is, it's better. love the file system, for instance.

PDF from Garmin

From what I recall, and it may have changed, there's a button at bottom left of one of the screens you go though early on during the update process that says something like 'install options'. It's not blatantly obvious and without clicking it and selecting to install to the PC and GPS, as said above, it will just update the GPS only.

Plenty of people just click 'Next' > 'Next' > 'Next' > 'Next' etc. when doing an install like this without reading each screen.
A pdf file just sent to me by Garmin goes through the step by step process and seems to cover points made by Bumpkin. However when I tried to attach file got this messagr " 1.57 MB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 146.5 KB for this filetype. " I know how to resize pictures but have no idea how,if inded you can, resize PDF files.File is titled "Installing A Region To The Device and SD card if needed.pdf" (Dont be put off by title it actually deals with full update and updates to SD cards)

Are these custom POI's?

On my device are all sorts of shops, petrol stations and stuff that's of no interest to me. When its connected to the PC and BaseCamp I see this... It's the black dot thingys against all the addresses of Blacks camping shops I am concerned about. Are they POI's or Waypoints? But whatever they are, how can I delete them?

I'm trawling the internet but not finding an answer yet
