Hi

I've got a pair of Marzocchi Shiver 45 Factory Works forks I'm fitting to my X Challenge and I'm looking for some advice about fitting the brake caliper to them.

My original plan was to just use the inners and stanchions from the Factory Shivers however I've discovered the Shivers top tubes and axle clamps are an exact match for the X Challenge, it's only the caliper mounts that are different. Since my X Challenge axle clamps are slightly damaged and would have to be machined to fit the rebound adjustment screw on the Factory Shiver inners it makes sense to use the Factory axle clamps if I can get a caliper mount/new caliper that will fit them.

I've measured the centre to centre distance of the brake mount holes to be 95mm on the Factory Works Forks. The X Challenge caliper holes are 77mm (approx) apart and the X Challenge fork brake mount holes are 55mm. I don’t know very much about caliper fittings are there any kind of standard sizes here?

Another option would be to get an adapter plate made that fits between the Factory forks and the existing caliper mount but I'd prefer to use an oem part if possible.

Any ideas welcomed. Thanks.

An adapter plate is your best option, even if you found a caliper to fit it may not be matched to the master cylinder.

I think the part is available off the shelf..

Just braved the howling gale outside to get some photos and have a measure of my own bike.

i take it you need something like this:

that looks like this when the tape isn't in the way:

The mounting bolts center to center are 95mm (i'll double check tomorrow).

The bracket is from a KTM 950 super enduro, and is the same bracket you would use if fitting 48mm WP forks to the front of your bike.

The part number will be floating around on here somewhere, as a few of us have done the WP swop.

AMS are listing the bracket as 60113049100, and it's £57, but please check before ordering.

no charge for this service . :beerjug:

Hi Guys. Thanks for the quick responses.

Timolgra – I was definitely thinking this but thought I check here first and that might have paid off.

rocky burns – I think it might have been :hide As a consolation I have got a pair of standard 45 Shivers off an Aprillia RXV that have the correct sized uppers but they would need the wheel clamps swapping over. They are in good condition (better than the Factory Forks actually) I paid £120 so would be looking to get that back. PM if any good for you.

Losttheplot – They came off a 450 exc
Losttheplot – Thank you for taking the time to check for me, that adapter certainly looks right. I’ll check it out and get one ordered.

I've fitted the KTM 950 SE adapter (60113049100) however some large spacers where required to get it aligned correctly over the disk. With the spacers fitted 8x35 KTM (0015080353) bolts are the correct length. You should be able to see the spacers in the photo. I'm assuming this a safe/acceptable way of mounting the caliper?

Thanks

As long as it is all tight how would this be a problem? If you are running knobbly tyres, the chances are the front tyre will break traction and dump you on the ground before you can get anywhere near the force required to shear the bolts off on the calliper bracket.

As long as the spacers and bracket are bolted tightly onto the fork leg i can't see how this would be a problem, but i'm sure someone else will correct me if this is wrong.

Should be fine..

Nothingtosee, a proper grand clean job, well played!

They came off a 450 exc, you say about the factory forks - but don't they run WP forks as standart? If so, where does one find a set of Factory Shivers?
And why did you use them instead of the (better condition) standart shivers you already had?

Finally, could you post a full size pic please so we can all admire the blacked out legs? =))

Gas Gas EC bikes run well spec'd shivers, and IIRC Aprilia RXV's use them as well. You may find them on husqvarna's as well, but the later bikes had the larger forks (50mm?)

Not sure about TM or Sherco.

Hi Bliss

I assume they were fitted to the 450 as an upgrade, I didn’t get to ask the seller why they were chosen over the standard WP forks.

I’ve had a saved search on ebay for a couple of months and these were the first pair that came up so I guess they’re not very common.

I went for these over the better condition 45 Shivers as they’ll need setting up so new seals and oil will be fitted anyway. The factory forks have coated stanchions so should be smoother and I assume better internals but I don’t know that for certain. And I wasn’t sure at the time of buying but they fit without changing the axel clamps over, since mine needed a repair that’s saved one job.

Next job is sending them away somewhere to be setup, I suspect they’ll need to change the springs as they feel too soft at the moment.
Attached images but I’ll post something better when the bike is back on the road. Just been quoted £300 to respray the plastics so might be rattle can time!

On ebay now:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/APRILIA-RXV-450-550-06-07-Front-Forks-Shockers-Suspension-Fork-Legs-MARZOCCHI-/231031955505?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item35ca93e031

Not sure they are "factory forks", but they should be a big improvement over standard, especially if you get them set up correctly for your weight and riding style.

Yep those are the same as the spare ones I've got here (except I can do them for £125 posted ;)) Not the Factory Works but as Losttheplot says a big improvement over standard.

Does anyone have a suspension specialist they'd like to recommend? I'm not sure whether its best to find somewhere OK local and take the whole bike or post them off to a recommended specialist. I need to get the forks and rear Ohlins shock serviced and set up for me/bike.

Either Torq racing (herts i think) or MH Racing near Swindon are 2 that spring to mind. MH racing are Ohlins specialists IIRC., but there maybe someone closer to you? suspension is a personal thing, so having someone local that can help you tweek the bike maybe a better bet?

Or try Baz at hyperpro?

Nothingtosee, or anyone else,
Can you tell me what bike those Shivers came off of? If I understand your posts, the axle clamps from those Shivers have a 95mm spacing between the caliper hanger mounting holes. Is that correct?

I'm trying to find a similar set of Shiver axle clamps, with 95mm spacing, to use on my X-Challenge conversion.
Thanks,
Doug
