The 1150GS i'm looking at getting has a standard exhaust on it, I was thinking of just changing the rear can for any aftermarket one, maket it sound a little better.

If I did, would I need to get anything checked or changed.
I know on my last bike I had to get the ECU re-mapped for it.

ALso and suggestions for a replacement? Used or new, but not to pricy
 
My 2p.
When I first got my 1150 I changed the rear can for a Remus and it didn't make much difference to the sound. It sounded a bit better, but not what I was expecting.

I ended up also swapping the cat for a y-pipe and that then gave me the intended sound.

If I was to do it again I would ditch the cat first and stick with the standard can, or just remove the standard can and fit a stubby pipe on the cat.

The Cat and stubby combo sounds great, gives you space for a full size panniers if wanted, and is the cheapest option. Wip the can off and see if you like the sound.

Bugbear I haven't subscribed as of yet, Waiting to see if I pick the bike up saturday first. then I will subscribe as I think I will be needing a few spares.

Replacing the cat, is that a hard job and would it be ok for MOT time or would I have to change back?

No not a hard job, 2 clamps at the header 1 clamp on the end can and 2 bolts holding it on to the bike. The hardest bit is undoing the sensor at the back of the cat, a good spray with plusgas will sort it though.

As for the MOT, it's fine with a Y-pipe, well mine has passed for the last 5 years with it on.
 
thats not a stubby, its a piece of pipe lol.

This Y pipe, sounds more like what I would be after, the trouble I have is I have had a vtwin with twin pipes and akrapovics fitted for about three years and love the sound, I got a feeling the BMW as standard is not very deep or loud.

Changing the to a y pipe would be better as the bike's cat is very rusty and looks crap plus it's not fitted with a sump guard/protector at the moment either.

this is going to be a long long week lol
 
changed my CAT to a Y piece in about half an hour, the change is massive!!!!
like the little pops she does aswell now:thumb
 
Or do what I did and take the standard can apart cut it open and weld a straight through pipe in. Weld it back up slip it back into its outer casing and a rortier sounding bike is made. I haven't tried it wthout the cat though.
Bike looks standard, all the numbers match with the correct ratings etc.

Cutting the thing apart would be more than I would want to do, very happy to take replace things but to cut open the can, not for me :)

No matter what you do or fit don't expect any increase in performance.

It'll sound faster, but it won't be. :D

The noise fecked me off on long rides, so i removed the remus and put the orignal end can back on. Far less tiring on long rides.
 
I put on a Y piece and a Race can (non remus) and the noise made it sound like a competition 4T crosser to the extent i got pissed off with it on long runs and took off the race can and reverted back to the standard one.

With that and the Y piece it sounds as i want it ;)
