Well I sold my bike and now have some cash to buy my first GS but it has to be cheap.
I've found a 99 high mileage 1150, seems ok and in my price range.
The question I have is the bike is a little rough with rusty parts and engine paint missing or corroding.
What common issues I could have on this and any things I should check before I had ove the cash

How many miles has it done?

These things will go for inter galactic distances compared to many other bikes. If it's got a decent pile of of service invoices, a recent MoT and rides ok - buy it. Change the fluids for peace of mind and get riding. Oils and filter shouldn't be more than about £30.

The cosmetic items are just that. Cosmetic. They all get rough round the edges but many have led a hard life. Shabby chic. Very cool...

No I haven't as of yet, how much is it to become a sponsor?

the bike i'm looking at has done 85k, I think for me coming from a shiny sports bike the bike looks rough, mostly rusy nuts and bolts ehich I know can be changed easy. the front part of the engine looks really corroded, but I guess this can be replaced or treated and painted.

I've never had a shaft drive bike before so a little worried about that as I would guess it would expensive to sort out if it fails. Knowing how many chain and sprockets i've gone though over the years this is the worry really.

For the price compared to whatr I have been seeing, this will be a good starter bike for me.

How many miles per gallon should I expect on the beast? my last bike only did 35mpg
 
I am up to 72 K miles on my 1150 and its running sweet. Had it a year and it was very rough around the edges and noisy. Got it all sorted now for very little outlay. And most of the parts I have replaced are OEM.

MPG is about 45 on my 1150.

I have just had a FD rebuilt by BMW as a service item and it cost a shade over £200. Two year warranty on that item now and peace of mind. I don't get off the bike and look straight at the FD drive now to see if its leaking.

Sponsorship is only £12. Well worth it and you can view the bikes that are being sold on here.
 
Yes I do indeed need to be a subscriber, will have to wait till friday payday before I can sub up, I will hold off and waiut till then before I make decision.

I came from a Mille to a GS. Completely different ride. Comfy, no aches and pains, less tyre changes, less fuel. Handles quite well for a big heavy, tall machine.

Cons. Not as quick, obviously, awkward to keep clean unless you have a jet wash and buffeting above 60mph.

No regrets on changing over tho. Did change the cat for an eliminator but sounded awful, specially after arrows on a v twin.

Only got mine a couple of months ago, but only ridden a handful of times.
 
Looking at the pictures, the engine paint is all flaking off, most of the nuts and bolts are of a rusty look and the bellypan and right cylinder protector/cover is missing.

Nothing major, I can't see any leaks etc. as the bike is in my price range I think it may be a good starter bike (make sure I like them)

Where can I can get replacement bits and pieces from? nothing major expensive, just the odd nut and bolt and maybe a panel or two :)

this is the beast in question :) Can't wait to pick it up. As you can see she is a little rough but with me taking it apart and replacing bits over time will get me to know the bike better.

looks good to me, a rusty subframe and parts are easily touched up with hammmerite paint from Halfords, My subframe looks new and the engine has had a few silver touchups done to help it look better.
just do a bit every weekend and it will look good in no time.
as long as its a sound basis to work from you are on to a winner IMHO

they go for ever as do all most all other bikes but they break down a lot due to poor build quality my advice get one if you like but be ready to spend a lot of time and money looking after it and get recovery service .This myth about about they go for ever so do honda kawasaki suzuki ect but are more reliable .You have been warned
 
Looks like a nice bike, you wont wear it out. Ignore all the rattles clunks and vibrations. They all do that.
 
thanks for the advise taffyflytyer. but I've been biking long enough to know that all bikes break at some point.

Just just come from owning three Aprilia's, the last one spent every month with something wrong with it. Even ont he say of sale the dog bone snapped on the test ride :)

Once I've found some reasonable places to buy parts (not cost the earth) then I'm sure I can get the bike up to a good standard.
For the price I'm buying for and what needs doing I think its worth a punt.
Not even ridden one yet so might not like the ride style

At the top of the page here Garvey you will find links to Motorworks, Sherlocks, Nippy Normans etc where you can get most of the stuff you need. Folks seem to have one that they use regularily, but they are all much of a muchness. For consumables such as brake pads, oil filters etc you'll find it hard to beat Steptoes Shop for value and service.

Whats the plastic bit called on the cylinder, looks like a protector. one is missing the bike im buying so need to get another

wondering when you would pop that dumb head up and you are correct i,m an expert on BMW 's i have enough of them to know how bad they are He's allready looking for parts he hasnt even bought it yet hahhahhahhhhhaaaaa
