Maybe new owner

i bought my first GS just over a month ago its an 04 gs adventure, i part exchanged a gsxr 1000 k6 for it and dont regret the move atall, it was fairly stock apart from a remus pipe and decat when i bought it but now with a modified set of 1200 pannier frames its got the full ally pannier set and a famsa tank set it looks a monster....! they are very cool bikes with more presence than a whore in a nunnery.. and providing you wernt one of the local power rangers and can ride a sports bike propperly just ride the gs the same, on paper they are so wrong its untrue but on the road they just make you grin with what you can get away with on them....:bounce1

enjoy and welcome to the forbidden side......:bow

Don't waste your money on a piece of plastic tat that does bugger all to protect the rocker cover. Get yourself something made of metal that bolts to the engine and protects the lot. Do a search on here, flea bay and google to find something that suits your style and budget.

wondering when you would pop that dumb head up and you are correct i,m an expert on BMW 's i have enough of them to know how bad they are He's allready looking for parts he hasnt even bought it yet hahhahhahhhhhaaaaa

I maybe looking for parts but thats because its missing! not because it's stuffed!

You can buy a new bike and it can breakdown, it's life. From what I have read about the bike, it has lots of common problem like anything else but nothing says to me its going to spend more time in a garage than on the road which is the reason im buying it Saturday.

Cracking site guys, got some really good info out of it so far
thanks for all your advice and help.

Hi All,

I am thinking of buying a BMW 1100GS and wondering what you guys think of them (post reading my riding description below). Its a 1997 bike that has been well looked after and does look like it will last for ever.

My riding:
- Live in London, hence 75% of biking is Central London traffic
- Own a BMW F800S, great for the London traffic (zippy and plenty of acceleration) but horrible for motorway or anything above 60mph. Vibey and no wind protection
- Thinking of 1100GS as it is a classic and would allow me to do motorways easier

I really don't want to be sending ~£1k here and there fixing it. If its in good condition, are they reliable? Its a 15 year old bike!?!

Thanks Nando

Ah we'll another one sucked in good luck you WILL need it !

May I ask why you are so negative about them yet you say you own many
I take it you have had plenty of issues.
Try owning an aprilia :) its good to have not just good reports
What have you had issues with if you don't mind me asking

Personally I would be worried by a bike that was left to be corroded and rusty.

On the one hand, it hasnt been messed with, but on the other, if the owner cant be bothered to clean it, I would wonder if all servicing had been done correctly, its more important on a banger because there is much scope for problems.

Ideally you should buy the best bike for the money and not the cheapest!

Looking at the pictures, the engine paint is all flaking off, most of the nuts and bolts are of a rusty look and the bellypan and right cylinder protector/cover is missing.

Nothing major, I can't see any leaks etc. as the bike is in my price range I think it may be a good starter bike (make sure I like them)

Where can I can get replacement bits and pieces from? nothing major expensive, just the odd nut and bolt and maybe a panel or two :)

this is the beast in question :) Can't wait to pick it up. As you can see she is a little rough but with me taking it apart and replacing bits over time will get me to know the bike better.

I had one of those and loved it. I found 'krust' great stuff. Makes any surface rust inert. Also offers the benefit of darkening the previously rusty bolt or join on the subframe. Available in mist good hardware shop. same setup as that horrible stuff that mothers used to stop their kid biting their nails in the 1970's. apply with the little brush and It makes the rust less noticeable. It's great stuff.

My advice: Buy some earplugs and get out there and ride it!

I'd love another one. Enjoy!

Don't take notice of any neg comments we all love our GS 's and the more you ride it the more you will love it. I sold my first GS 3 years ago had another bmw since but not a GS so just bought another now happy again. :blagblah

Nothing like the ape but I love it, nice and smooth and comfy.
Looking forward to swapping the insurance over tomorrow and taking it for a few miles
One problem I have noticed so far is the main headlight is smoky looking in the centre, didn't notice that when I rode it and bought it but still love it

I think the headlight has a projector lens inside. Put a hid bulb in my, made a huge difference.
