PRODUCT UPDATE

BMW R1150 GS / R / Rockster - all models

Remus have addressed an issue relating to a potential problem relating to panniers fitted to 1150 models when using the Remus Revolution silencer.

It appears there is a possibility of heat from the end spout causing damage to the panniers under extreme conditions.

Remedy :D

To avoid this Remus have developed a deflector shield to protect the panniers from any such occurrence.

The heat shield can be fitted simply and removed at will – by simply undoing the retaining screw. Therefore the overall look of the silencer is not compromised by the heat shield when the panniers are not in use.

Retail Price is £23 inc vat

Part Number is 087799

However as an additional safety measure they also recommend that owners fit a heat resistant protective sheet on the pannier where it is nearest to the silencer.

This heat resistant sheet is actually a BMW part number.

It would seem that BMW are aware that potential problem exists on other BMW models even when using BMW original exhausts. This heat proof sheet will protect the pannier from any heat damage.

BMW part Nr. 46 54 2 316 611.

Got mine at Hein Gericke...

duh

Sounds like bill gates marketing strategy.
Sell a flawed product then offer to sell bodges at remarkable prices

lets see - clamp - maybe £4 max - bit of bent stainless - £2 max.

4 +2 = ah yes £23

jeez ! i'm in the bizness

WHY

Why are you paying money for an issue that should be sorted out under warranty, you must be mad !!

But why would BMW warranty pay out for damaged caused to your pannier due to the use of an aftermarket silencer

Also I understand these 'extreme' conditions are caused/exacerbated by the removal of the baffle are they not?

In my experience over 6,000 miles with baffle, no problems, less than a thousand without baffle (which left without my permission) has seen the demise of 3 indicators and 5 lenses despite aluminium exhaust tape coverings.

I think I'll keep my baffle well and truly in place then. Thanks David :thumb

I removed my baffle as soon as it was fitted .I've had no problems in over 3000 miles with panniers except some 'sooting' on the panniers and indicator.
Met a guy in the alps with an Adventure with a bloody great hole in his pannier after fitting a remus revolution. I think careful setting up of the angle of the pipe is crucial.

Marcus:confused:

i've got 6000 miles with a remus revolution race pipe on my 1100, thats 1100 - and not a melted bit anywhere.

Except for eardrums if you're being overtaken :)

How about a lump of kitchen foil and a drop of Evo-Stik on the pannier? Max, 6p?

I have used sticky back foil tape from the building trade on the curved exhaust area of the pannier. My panniers have been used with a lazer can on an 1100GS since '96- and now the last year with a remus race can on an 1150 [7 years]. No problems?
Mind you it is now starting to peel - so thanks for reminding me - I will replace in time for Princetown!

Just Out Of Interest

.. is this a Twin Spark Issue?

My 2003 single spark + Revolution - baffle: panniers and indicators barely get warm even after sustained hi speed m-way runs.
Forgive me if I missed this info in the thread but I'm speed reading and dodging the boss :D

twin spark

Simon
as you may know I've had this problem - it does seem to be related to a twin spark as they run leaner, therefore hotter and Remus have admitted they only tested the Revolution can on the single spark model.
Having seen the mod. I think the hacksaw will be coming out - unless of course our oh so friendly dealer will see me righted
Sherps!;)

melting panniers

I can tell you that the only melted pannier we have seen was fitted on an Adventure and directly above a 'replacement' exhaust. It was quite an impressive hole but the owner readily agreed that this had been caused by his rather hot sports exhaust and Y piece (caused in part by some seriously hard and long riding). ooh er!

We have never seen this on a BMW with a factory fitted (and un modified) exhaust although as suggested earlier some BMW pannier cases are fitted with heat insulation as standard - this only applies to certain models. The cost of this insulation is £7.71 + VAT.

Cheers

Unfortunately all I have done is fit the Remus y-piece (at a dealers) and this also blowed a hole in the pannier. As I said in an earlier post the dealer replaced the pannier carcass foc, and checked there wasn't anything wrong, and also fitted the heat resistant shield. Which I couldn't argue with.

Is it worth packing the pannier rails bolts with a few washers to push the pannier a few mill away from the hot exhaust as I'm sure that there is a very fine line from melting to no melting. Sorry, I'm no engineer....but I'm a bloody good bodger ????

Marcus:D

Worried!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got an 02 GS and have just refitted my Remus alloy race can.
I will be putting my panniers on tomorrow as I'm off up north to see the folks. I wont have a problem with melting, will I?
