Mine just broke down...

Just been to Dick Lovett - my new white GS of exactly the same spec has just left the factory.
So I should have it in a little while. Dick Lovett will be transferring over the non BMW extras I fitted, apart from the beak extention, because that puts holes in the beak, so can't easily be transferred.

Sorted.

Very happy with that.

Black frame, or silver? I heard that 2015 production has already started.:thumb

Being honest, I couldn't really ask for more.
Chris at Dick Lovett pulled out all the stops to swap a bike order with another dealer - and bearing in mind some of the waiting times I am hearing, he has really pulled the rabbit out of the hat to get me one at such short notice.
And they have offered a loan bike too - but I haven't been too well, and also been too busy at work to use it, so I have declined it.

So I'm getting a pretty good deal really.
My one year old bike went plop, and they are giving me a new one within a few weeks.
I will have had a year of riding "for free" as it were!

Only thing is that I'll have to run it in!
(Definitely a third world problem)

But I will be getting them to fit gearshift pro.....

Indeed, there are many other failures that can cause a locked back wheel, and they are indeed rare. But funnily enough, I don't find any comfort in that right now.

Hey, your bike nearly killed you, but it's ok, cos it doesn't do that very often at all!
Yeah - makes me feel just great!

To anyone that wonders what the fuss is about - ignorance must be bliss...

As I said, it not a logical thing - it's not about percentages and probabilities, it's about how I feel about it.

I've been riding long enough to know the dangers - yet I still do it ( and will continue).

Yeah, call it being "soft" or "girlie" if you want - but it's severely dented my confidence in the machine at the moment. It will take time to restore it.

i know exactly how you feel…..and for this reason and this reason alone i have given back my RT 1200 LC and have sorted a deal for a new blue GSA …theres no way i could ride that RT "in anger " it would be forever in my mind that the rear end could collapse at any time…no confidence in it at all ,,its gone

Funny that you should feel like that...:nenau

Personally, i'm really looking forward to getting my RTLC back, so that i can run rings around all those GS/GSA's.
I've ridden the GSALC and i currently have a new GSLC loaner. But they're not in the same league as the new RT, as a complete road bike package..
In comparison, the GSLC is noisy, rattly, buzzy, fighty, clunky and unrefined.

Still....whatever floats yer boat eh...:thumb

Is the RTLC that good !

It is, if you're 70 years old!:D

Hey, i'm a spritely 55 (so i'm allowed to have an RT).:augie
But seriously, i've owned every incarnation of the GS (except the R80GS). And my favourite one was actually the 2013 R1200GSA TC.

However, as a 'do anything, go anywhere (except off road maybe) , sports tourer. i think its unbeatable.....

I just need BMW to sort the fucking rear suspension out, so that i can ride the fucker...:blast

i too have a new GS loaner , after having a K1600 loaner…I'm loving this GS ,its opened my eyes as to why i really need the RT…my RT was fully loaded, Sat Nav,Audio etc….i paid nearly £18k for it, now some cease monkey is going to strip the rear end and rebuild it!!! and when its re build will it be the same ? …..if and when it all calms down , in the next 12 months or so, I will try the RT again …but for now its just knocked my confidence

Hope you get your bike back soon and thanks for the warning. I'll keep a special lookout in my mirrors coz there's always a first time for everything ;) :thumb

Lost cam chain

My 2014 5,000 mile R1200GS WC has just, I am pretty certain, suffered the same fate ....

Ironically my bike was due in at the dealer tomorrow to be checked out as I had discovered the 'loose bolt behind the starter motor' problem just before going on holiday. I picked up on that in this thread while researching an ASC fault that the bike presented a month or so back.

Today I took it to refuel ready for tomorrow. Sounded a bit noisier than usual, then would not shift 2nd to 3rd resulting in me hitting the rev limited twice - awkward moment - so had to back right off to upshift. Rode for about a mile short shifting to make sure that gears were selecting correctly. Seemed OK - other than still sounding very 'tappety', which I was starting to think was just me being phobic about the loose bolt and potentially related cam chain failure. Downshifted 3 to 2 on approach to the next junction at max 25mph - big 'clunk' followed by lots of unhealthy mechanical noise and then the bike appeared to stall. Clutch in, I tried to restart - bike moved forward as though clutch was still engaged. Then everything locked leaving me stranded! I was pretty certain that I knew the cause ....

Managed to get the bike in to N and then it did move - albeit with a lot of grinding coming from everywhere.

Kerbside I removed the oil filler cap and confirmed no visible cam chain ....

Right now I am just very grateful that this happened at low speed and in a straight line - rather than tomorrow on far more interesting roads en route to the dealer!

Interesting that the dealer had been questioned by a potential GS WC customer yesterday about the 'cam chain problem' and had been reading threads about it today.

The bike is fantastic - I am new to motorcycling (well, discounting the Honda SS50 experience 35 and a bit years ago) and decided to learn to ride only so that I could buy this bike. Disconcerting as it is to know that this problem was lurking in the engine, I cannot wait to get on another LC ....

Captain Beaky - any chance that you could let me have the name of anyone who helped you at BMW UK. I don't doubt that the dealer will be supportive, just want to be in a position to help them short circuit the process to getting the situation sorted!

Tim Abbott (managing director BMW UK) he will than put the matter in the hands of Andy Cook, but don't expect a new bike unless your dealer contributes.

Oh, sorry to hear that.

BMW do provide "assistance" to the dealer when it comes to warranty claims, exactly how much is the question.

When a bike gets changed under warranty, the dealer doesn't get to keep the old bike, it gets sold via an inter- dealer auction, so BMW must be providing some additional support to the dealer.

I'm not sure what the criteria are for changing a bike, or how close I was to that limit.

I have to be honest, I saw my old bike in the dealer, all fixed up, and couldn't look at it - like you, if it had failed a minute earlier, I shudder to think of the consequences.

Have a chat with your dealer, and see what happens.

A letter might help - after all, the bike isn't a year old yet...
