Does anyone know the minimum mileage required for a running in service. The book says 600 but my service is booked with rainbow for saturday and 500 will be the best i can manage unless i go out and circle the m60 a couple of times at night

I think it depends on how you do the 500 miles, IMHO I keep the running in miles as much as possible on twisty A / B roads up hill down hill, up and down the gearbox and up and down the rev range 4000 max for the first 200 and then occasional 5000 ish at times, for the next 400, better to rev than to lug in too high a gear. No Motorways and no long constant same gear same revs, that's what I have always done and have never had heavy oil consumption on a boxer after 6000 miles. The absolute worst way to run in is 600 miles up the motorway.

I had the same problem when I first got my GSA....booked the service quickly cos of availability, and then struggled to get the miles in :blast

What I did was got up really early on the Saturday of the service, and was on the road by 6.30!

Technically I was just heading for the dealers for the service..but it felt like going away on a trip! And I just went off in all directions, just really for the love of riding the bike, eventually ending up where I needed to be.

With the roads being quiet and empty, and luckily it being a glorious summer morning, the riding was amazing!

I racked up the extra miles in no time...and remember arrriving at the dealers at 8.30...alongside the other bikers booked in for servicing who looked very bleary-eyed...feeling alert, alive, and happy, with the biggest smile on my face :)

The hardest part was handing over the keys cos I couldn't wait to do it again on the way home :thumb2

But as Frank says......doing a 100 miles on the motorway will not benefit the bike...better to be a few miles less.

Hope this is of help....and I'll have my fingers crossed for a sunny spring morning for you on Saturday :thumb2

I couldn't agree more with how you run a bike in to get the best life from an engine. If you don't think that you will be able to increase the mileage before the service then rearrange it for another date. It is better to get nearer to a thousand miles than 500 and you'll appreciate it in the long term.
