Just changed my brake fluid. It was dirty for sure but this hasn't made the brake lever any firmer...As we speak it is resting in the garage with the lever pullled back (hoping to release some bubbles) but the Mityvac was crap...

I must be using it wrong because I opened the resevoir, undid the nipple..(hmmmmm, nice), and attached the mityvac. Pumping it wasn't as effective as I thought. In fact the fluid preferred to fall out do to gravity than anything else...it seemed connected ok and the fluid did move when being pumped (hmmm, nice:-) but I just bleed them the old way in the end because the pump wasn't pumping....

Any advice how to use the mityvac better...otherwise it is going back to heil gericke....
Tanks a millon

attach it to the bleed nipple, pump it, build up a vacuum, then open the bleed nipple .

it's a vacuum pump not a suck a bit at a time pump

Wrong bore ?

I've got a used one if you want to try it out ? It seemed to work ok but the supplied tubing is a little too large for the nipple, hence you get an air stream sucked in alongside the bleed head. It did however shift the fluid fairly rapidly and was easier than pumping.

Thanks Steptoe, you understood my explanation! I was sucking a little bit at a time....IF you build up too much suck at the nipple (so to speak), then open the nipple, won't it just suck the entire lot from the resevoir in one go? Or does it still come out slowly enough to keep the resevoir topped up?

They cost about 36.99 and the catalogue doesn't refer to them as mityvacs...but they are...

Mr Steptoe I'll PM you about booking my bike in to your garage...

Cheers

Suck out the res fluid first and fill with new,, put some thick grease around the nipple threads to avoid air going down the threads, fit a good tight pipe on the nipple and pump up some vacuum in the bottle,, Then undo the nipple about a half turn untill you see the presure dropping, keep pumping gently and top up the res if ness, tighten the nipple when you see fresh fluid comming out,,, repeat with other nipples untill done.
Then and only then touch the lever to check your pressure.
This job gets tricky with ABS, and is hard if you drained the system first..Good look.
ps,, you can do the job easier without the mitivac???.

Used it on my back brake after accidently pulling off the reservior pipe stripping something

Manually I could not managed to do it at all the old and tried method as my abs got some air in. With the Mityvac it was about 10 minutes and sorted. You need to create a vacuum, open the nipple and close it again, redo procedure a couple of times untill all the fluid is clear. Keep an eye on the reservior so it does not empty.

It won't suck everthing out with one go as far as I can recall. Unfortenately not a job if you like me very impatient to see results quicker than what is normally expected.
