Mobile phones, bikes & Starcom/Autocom

Yes. It arrived today. Not tested yet, but can confirm that it is a 2.5m hole so the autocom lead plugs straight in.More coming soon.

But surely the phones Tobers and I were talking about have a USB fitting with no jack. I know the K750i that I have has and this is the connector Tobers just bought. Hmm, I'm really confoozed now :nenau

Whooaa there kids....you don't need an adadtor for this to that etc.....all you need to do is ring AutoCom and ask for a K750/W800 connector and they'll send you one out for £10. They've only been available for 3 weeks

That's what I did, for my Sony Eric W800 Walkman Phone it plugs straight into the bottom of the phone and has a 2.5mm jack socket at the other end, then plug the cable supplied in the AutoCom kit with a 2.5mm jack plug at one end into it and plug the other end with the 3.5mm jack plug into the Aux2 socket on the AutoCom.....jobs a gud un.

You can use the W800 or K750 as a phone/radio/mp3 player, set it to auto answer and when you receive a call on the go, it will mute the music and you can impress who ever you are talking to by telling them that you are currently procceding down the M1 at one hundred and twenty miles an hour !

You must ask the person who called you to make sure thay hang up the phone correctly or it will keep the call active as it is very difficult to press the "end call" button on your phone if it's stuffed in a pocket or tank bag when on the move.

Hope this helps

No unfortunately it doesn't charge the phone, but the battery life on the W800 is very very good

Duff information alert!!

The connector I got for the K800/K750 from Sensorcom actually has a 3.5mm socket not a 2.5mm one. It therefore wont work directly with the standard autocom lead. However, I used it with a different autocom lead which has a 3.5mm end and it worked fine except...

...the connector is a retractable type i.e. the ribbon-like cable is on a sprung pulley thing which slurps the cable back into a little drum to keep everything tidy. However, the cable has the microphone on it where the 3.5mm socket is, so the microphone does not wire through to the autocom.

All in all, it's wrong, so dont buy one.

Looks like calling Autocom as Andy Hird said is the easiest way to go.

For what its worth, the radio on my K800 (with RDS) worked fine as did the MP3 player but I couldn't make calls as the other person wouldn't hear me.

I was reading this thread at the weekend and was pleased to hear that the 800/750i phones had an RDS radio - been after one for a while currently use an MP3 player with radio but no RDS - so once I get to about Basingstoke (from the Isle of Wight) I loose Terry and his mates on Radio 2 (Clouds and silverlinings come to mind).

Anyway went into the local phone shop (well one of many even here on the Isle of Wight) and even though I have only had my existing phone for a year they have upgraded me to a 750i for no charge whatsoever! Damn strange world we live in.

I will call autocom in the morning for the adaptor - now I need to remember the name of the RAM waterproof box thingy as the one I have was ok for the MP3 but too small for the new toy.

Excellent help lads.

Any idea if this would work with a Starcom Andy?

Sorry John I don't know as I only have experience with AutoCom, but if they are similar systems , ie they use 2.5 and 3.5mm jack plugs and sockets then I don't see why not. You could buy the AutoCom connector for the phone, give it a try on your StarCom and see if it works...which it probably will, but if it doesn't then you could sell it on here no problem.

Cheers

I must admit I'm in two minds now as to whether a phone/radio is viable on a bike. I tried my 750i with the radio this morning (with the standard issue headphones) and I could hardly hear anything even with the volume at full. :( If I wore ear plugs I doubt I would hear anything!! It's not buffeting but just general wind/helmet noise. Perhaps the volume on this phone is an issue as it seems very quiet even off the bike. Will the Autocom/Starcom amplify the phone i.e. make it louder than standard?

Another issue was that the radio reception was really poor and that the RDS didnt re-tune the signal, perhaps this is just the area I'm travelling in. Maybe I'm expecting too much here :nenau

Just did the same with my K800i this morning. Listening to Radio4 from Guildford, all was fine, reception great, and with custom moulded earplug speaker things, the sound level was fine.

However, as I went round the M25 the reception went fuzzy and the RDS couldn't/wouldn't tune into a stronger frequency. And of course it's too fiddly to adjust on the move (especially when the phone is in my handlebar bag!).

Eventually I stopped once off the motorway and hit the tune button, and it retuned to a much better Radio4 signal. Dont know why it didn't do this automatically before.

So I think

a) the RDS on the K800i (and K750 most likely) is a bit duff
b) any fiddling/adjustment etc whilst on the move is pretty impossible

I'll try it again on the way home with a different national station and see how it goes.

Actually, much much better.

I'm not sure what's different, but I've had Radio 4 running both last night, this morning and tonight on the way from Guildford to Slough. I must go across 3 frequencies on the trip, and now for some reason the RDS is retuning much better. I can hear the RDS re-tuning (it goes quiet for about 3 seconds). The reception is generally pretty good, but a bit fuzzy at times. Speech & music clearly audible though.

I think maybe I had set off on my first trip without RDS switched on.

Anyway, it's a joy to listen to the radio when riding. I did almost crash when laughing out loud to Heresy at 6:30 this evening.

So, thumbs up from me. The K800 is a cracking phone - shame you lot cant have one for a couple of months yet :D

Great Tobers - bodes well - I have just got the K750 phone - and am awaiting delivery of the adaptor from Autocom and then I shall try it out on Sunday as I hope to go to the World Superbikes at Silverstone. Will let you know how I get on.

John
I like Tobers have those custom moulded speaker ear plug things from Ultimate Ear which are bloody marvelous, but they are very expensive £150  but I think they are worth the monet as the quality of the sound through them is fantastic

Hi Guys

Got my 750i and the autocom connector and just tried it - but it appears that the radio is not getting a signal. I know the lead is also the ariel and this worked fine on my mp3 player radio.

Any thoughts?

Chris
