Off to Spain in a couple of weeks and are then carrying on to Morocco. We are planning to do the Barcelona to Tangiers return ferry to save on road miles but is it best to book from the UK before we leave or is it easy and cheaper to book when we are in Barcelona during the previous week?
Any help much appreciated for a Moroccan virgin.

Why miss out on riding Spain? - should be lovely this time of year.

I'd recommend Algeciras to Cueta.

There are many who say Tangiers is a dodgy dump and not for a Moroccan virgin. Cueta is Spanish and re-orientates you before the Moroccan border.

No need to pre book. We arrived 16.40 and with the help of a (free) helper we made the 17.00 fast cat.

It's your trip, but I can't really see the point.

By road it's about 700 miles of really great riding each way.

By ferry it's 24hours each way, plus over £210 for a return fare for bike and rider (and you don't even get a berth for that) and there's only one ferry a week.

We are staying at Barcelona during the previous week so the ferry from there to Tangiers seems an easy one to take. Re cost:- the Barcelona/Tangiers ferry is £250 each return including a cabin, which works out slightly cheaper than riding down to Algeciras and catching a ferry to Ceuta. The down side being that we are on a boat instead of the bikes plus if we have a problem in Morocco then there is a chance we could miss the return ferry, whereas the shorter more frequent crossing is more flexible.
Are there any must see places on the route from Barcelona to Algeciras(2 days ride) and on the return route up through Spain and France (3 days ride).
Thanks for the guidance, any more advice welcome:thumb.

Can't work out how barcelona to algerciras is a two day ride, but spain and france back to england is a three day ride ?

A group of us Rode from algerciras past barcelona (tossa del mar, don't ask :D) comfortably in a day 3 years ago.
And have rode from bordeaux in france to algerciras in a day a few times.

Thanks for that Steptoe, my timings are a guesstimate based on not wanting to push on too much and miss anything of interest. I think so far we have viewed Spain and France as just a means for getting to and from Morocco but after a rethink of our routes we can make a bit more of it. I'm sure after riding The Pyrennes on the way down and then 8 days in Morocco the return leg could be a bit dull but WTF we're on the bikes and not at work:).

the road to Ronda from the coast is fantastic, Granada, siera nevada mountains to name a few.:D

Two days through Spain would be a nice ride - not much need for motorways.

As has been said, road up to Rhonda is excellent - said to be one of the best biking roads in the World.

The centre of Spain surprised me in how wild and raw it is - plenty of mountains, lakes, scrub bush etc. Not at all boring hot wheat fields.

Hotels are not too expensive and food is great.

What's not to like?
