Motorcycle security when away from home

Ironic really, when the council seems to provide security loops (as demanded regularly by bikermates) who then ignore them.

We saw the same thing at our office in London. The landlord put aside a long stretch of the building, exclusively for motorcycle parking, putting in a rail to which bikes could be chained. None of them used it.

Funny old world.
The loops are a great idea as they stop car drivers parking in the motorcycle parking area and provide a decent anchor to fix a chain/cable to. Just strange that very few people use them.

+1 i parked at my local council owned car park, they have a couple of high hoops in the MC area

Front wheel up to the hoop, litelock through the wheel & hoop , and a small discklock through the disk just to piss off any light fingerd persons

When I worked in Lancaster, I had free parking in the multi-storey car park in the city centre. Dedicated motorcycle bays, too… After a few years, one of the attendants approached as I was locking or unlocking the bike to ask me if I would park on the other floor the next week, as they were installing ground anchor bars. I used them” bar every day afterwards and was amazed at the council for fitting them, considering I paid not a single penny in the 8yrs I parked there.

Litelok discount code for next few days is SEPTEMBER15- I’ve just ordered an x3

I bought a Litelok X1 moto and it fits perfectly through the link of the Abus 12KS chain (without trimming off the rubber!)

I’ve added a few bits for my forthcoming trip to Pyrenees on Wing .
Bought an Abus noose chain to use with Litelok X1

Also bought a waterproof Oxford cover with top box cutout and it fits perfectly

It’s even got a cutout for a lock at the front .

I’ve also got my alarmed Abus Granit disc lock and Kovix brake lever lock.

Should stop the fuckers .

Bike will be left out in San Sebastián as mate (who’s planned the trip ) wanted to stay at the Mercury on top of Monte Igueldo whereas I would have used my usual SANSEBay Hotel with hidden garage .

Were staying in middle of nowhere a few nights and a quite town in France with on street parking but I’ll use the locks and cover . Might as well if I’ve got them .

Bought an Abus noose chain

There’s a coincidence, I just bought the same chain, 12ks 120 noose

I’ll use it to lock my bike to my funky new trailer when it arrives

I’ve got a nice long U lock (French classe SRA) that I’ve had for years, it fits nicely around the two bottom chassis tubes of the trailer and goes through the end of the loop chain between the two tubes, the noose goes around the fork leg above the bottom clamp

To be honest, I very rarely carry a lock when I’m away but on the trailer the weight and bulk are not a problem

Having watched many You Tube videos of the thieving scum literally pushing GS's away in broad day light with no intervention from Jonny public I now use X2 Abus disc locks, front wheel, even if left for only a few minutes ... cos that is all it takes.

By the way, top tip pop pickers !

I got 20 quid off my Abus chain by buying from Amazon warehouse (y)

It was repackaged, not in the original packaging, so I guess someone returned it.

I figured for a chain there wasn’t much that could be wrong with it and you get the same return policy as a new item :nenau

Why should Johnny Public get involved, if the arse owner of a GS (or any bike) probably worth several thousand, can’t be arsed to secure it against a simple push away?

When some senior plod bod recommended Joe Public “Get stuck in”, he came in for justifiable ridicule on these pages.

My exact words in Mieres Del Camino last week. Roadlok on two GSs, 13mm Pragmasis loop chain through both hubs, secured by Pragmasis bottle lock.

If ever I think I can’t be arsed, I have a little angel on my shoulder, who whispers “Practice what you preach, Richard” in my ear. It works….

The Abus noose chain is pretty good, I used mine which I've had a while now while away recently, find something for the noose to go around and then it goes through the rear hub of the Stelvio and then the litelok through that. Much like Wapping, even if I'm tired and I want to walk away, that little voice goes off in my head saying "It's hard to continue without the bike, and if they really want it, at least make it as difficult as possible".

In Plzen recently I was there on the Stelvio, and there were 4 Slovakian bikes parked up, a wing, two Africa twins and a K1600, none of them secured with anything other than steering locks. Mine was there with the Cheap oxford cover, Abus noose, Litelok and hiplock on the front ......... probably a bit overkill, but I'd forgotten my butter.

Funniest thing was in Brno at the Hotel Vaka, where the female manager came out and stopped me parking, brought me around the back of the hotel and parked it in a meeting room with a coaster under the sidestand :) She did explain that in the last year or so, that area has been a target for theft.

No top box fitted to my ducati so limited to what I can carry. Now use a couple of Kreiga drypacks, a 10l one for just the locks! Carry a Hiplok X chain, Litelok X1 and Seatylok Mason D-Lock (light but incredibly strong lock) as well as two alarmed disclocks if out for a full day and need to leave the bike somewhere. I figure that with these fitted any scumbag thief would raise a neanderthal eyebrow in bemusement and try their luck on something less fortified.

I lock the steering occasionally. Well when I remember.

Out of curiosity, anyone know how these locks stand up to a diamond cutting disc?

fairly sure the disc that cut through my Abus chain was a diamond disc - cut through in seconds with no bluing of the chain
