Bigmxer is right I have had it from the sales mans lips, your third party will only come into effect if someone hits you. If you ball it up the road, to use his words "you own it"...
Yes, we all know the rules regarding the law and third party insurance. What we are discussing is the fact that Motorrad are demanding fully comp cover to ride their, demo/lone bikes, but only telling us in the small print and not disclosing it, in, 'the sign here, don't worry it's only to do with insurance', form, they chuck at us nonchalantly across the desk, minutes before we are due to leave the building with one of their bikes. I would quite happily take the bike out with 3rd party cover, knowing if I binned it, I pay for it, but the point is, as already stated, BMW obviously are not, but only tell everyone that in the small print. The question arising therefore, once again, for the benefit of those not listening properly is. You take the bike, and bin it, what then will Motorrads attitude to you, the loyal customer, be then?
1. Oh sorry sir, you'll have to fork out for the bike, cause the accident was your fault, or
2. Oh sorry sir, you signed the form to say you had the appropriate cover, but you don't, we therefore as an extremely large conglomerate, withdraw the permission to ride/drive the vehicle, as required in law, and will be pressing charges of Taking and Driving Away, oh yes, and you owe us £9,000 please.
My point again is; It doesn't F***king matter if you have the minumum insurance requirement under law for the vehicle. If they withdraw their permission to ride the damn thing, you're up the creek with out a feckin paddle, and £9,000 out of pocket, and all that's before the judge decides. So go away and chew on that again.
MOTORRAD ARE THE ONLY VEHICLE SALES COMPANY I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS WHO DEMAND THIS, CERTAINLY IN THIS SORT OF MANNER, (SHARP PRACTICE I CALL IT)!!!!!!!, and something that can and has caught us all out very easily, by the looks of the replies to this thread.
What do I want them to do, I here you ask, well;
1. I want them to be like everybody else in this modern world, who want your business. Go through those forms with you( with a fine tooth comb if necessary), do not throw them across the desk at you and ask you to sign them, and tell you not to worry.
2. State clearly and leave no doubt in your mind, that they require you to ride the bike, under your own insurance, and it must be fully comp. Otherwise you can't have the bike.
Why do I get the feeling that suddenly the test riding of any BMW bike or loan bike, for the day will suddenly grind to a halt, for those that have read this thread. I know of no insurance company, except for BMW of-course, who will insure you fully comp to ride someone elses bike, on your own policy, that's what company insurance is for fercrisake!!!!. Another sharp business ploy methinks.
I've stated my piece, and after a few weeks of a thread still have no definitive answer, to what is potentially a huge quandry, all I'm saying now, is, unless BMW change their very obviously flawed approach to this matter, please be careful.....
cheers,
THE BARON
