I recently moved house on my `GS from the far north coast of scotland down to sunny cornwall- the fact of it is i only got as far as Manchester before trouble struck! I stopped in Charnock Richard services (M6)- very silly name!!! Had a smoke and realised I had oil on my back tyre and wheel rim- closer inspection: Oil leaking from my rear final drive (only a small amount)- Not happy- B*W emergency service ferry'd my bike the whole rest of the way... good service but shame cos it was so hot and sunny- has anyone else had the rear drive seal leak? Luckily it's all on warranty- but I don't know why it picked now to go? Moving house on a motorbike? disaster series!!! After a week of waiting my bike is on it's way back to me now- I can't wait, one reason being the hire bike i got in the meantime is a honda deuville (impossible to ride after you ride a GS!)- looking forward to having my girl back so i can give her a good thrashing!:augie

Pull up a comfy chair, do a search on final drive oil seals and settle down for a long evenings read.

You may wont to wait until the winter sets in, cos it would be a shame to be spending the glorious spring/summer evenings reading when you could be riding.:augie

It was probably the weight of the wardrobe that did the bearing in!

:D

LOL- Yes I was heavily loaded up- slightly over-loaded panniers plus rucksacks and hold-alls lashed to the back woven together with bungees, cargo nets and rock straps! Would that knacker my final drive seal? I mean i am sure the weight was about similar to a 'heavy' girlfriend i used to have... mind you she never got on the bike! is that a spec for the weight it can pull/carry? I'll be out and about in the sun as soon as my GS gets back- should be soon- it's a scorcher outiside today!

Just ensure you get a new final drive assembly, and not just a new oil seal fitted. If BMW fit just the seal you'll be back for a new FD sooner or later.:rob

Charnock Richard

Hi - bumped into you (figuratively speaking) in Charnock Richard car park just as the bike was being loaded on the trailer. Glad to hear you reached Cornwall OK!
Ref. earlier comments - I could not have crammed that lot into my wife's wardrobe - and that's got three doors and stands 8 ft tall ........ Pretty impressive load!

As far as Charnock Richard goes - it's the pits. Time the bulldozers moved in.

Cheers

Can I ask where you got your hire bike from?

All the insurance or breakdown policies Ive known dont provide this :nenau and it would be v v useful to me.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey Wildcat! We met in Charnock Richard- were you they guy in the BMW car or the other guy from NZ? That was some journey and yes i was seriously loaded up! I did get to Cornwall in the end, despite BMW assist delivering my bike to the wrong location- a set of two journeys, finally ending with me lugging my panniers and rucksacks and bike kit about on and off trains! I will post it all next time- The bike is now enjoying lots of bumpy, twisty roads throughout sunny cornwall- To the other question asked above- where did i get my bike? From John Clarke Aberdeen: the 2 year BMW assist came free for 2 years with the warranty- amazing service- Mondial BMW assist have picked me up from everywhere (motorway service stations, wild mountain tops in scotland, west coast transporting to far east coast)- I have had to use them quite a lot thanks to warranty issues with the electronics- I advise getting this service to anyone who rides their bike far and wide (i was living off mine)- Thats me- feel free to ask more questions...
