Hi Folks,

I know its been discussed on numerous posts but just wanted to ask what the thoughts are on the onboard range calculations that the 2011 on 1200GS TC has.

I have read about folk filling the tank to use up the expansion part of the tank so on Friday knowing i had a good 110 mile run ahead of me i brimmed the tank so filling it right up the neck to the top. I reset the trip and watched over the next few miles the range count up and up to say a max range of 178miles. Anyway tonight im doing my reverse commute and set off from home after covering 112miles on Friday, i get to 185.3 and the range is saying i have 16miles left so not wanting to chance it and given the next stop is 32 miles i pull in and brim the tank again, this time it takes 17ltrs to the brim same as Friday.

So since this is supposed to be a 20ltr tank, then why is the range telling me im going to be out in 16miles given im getting 49.8mpg (i have worked this out over the weeks) and the computer agrees then this should give me around 218 miles to a 20 litre tank. So i am getting short changed a bit on the computer. I know its only 16miles out but how accurate are others bikes??

Oh and it takes a hell of a time when you fill it to work out how far you will go, tonight brimmed and started off saying 168miles to empty, 33miles later and its saying 177miles to empty.

I suppose the only way to tell is to brim the tank carry a wee petrol can and run her dry and see what i get.

So what you all getting, do you reset the trip and say start looking for petrol station at 175miles or something, oh and riding style taking it easy say 70mph most of the time. And the gauge well it was showing no bars at around 175miles travelled.

As normal any thoughts much appretiated.

Sorry I have a GSA. Average full tank range reads 300 miles. Once got to 350 miles in France. Lowest I have been is 3 miles and sweated the last bit. It does take ages to show full once re fuelled. I tend not to lose too much sleep over it and refuel when the gauge bars are below half. That means I have a 100 miles plus window.

According to my computer I get 47.8 mpg. I really don't worry about it. £20 or £30 for a day on the GSA is a good cheap day out. I used to run a boat. that was 1 ltr per mile. That hurt.

The range calculation is based on how you are riding at the time so can change dramatically in a short period of time. I've had nearly 600 miles showing on my GSA when I've beem bimbling at sensible speeds in the US but I really don't take much notice until the tank is getting towards empty. Mine is fairly accurate to be fair and when it says 1 mile, it means it!! The fuel guage is also fairly accurate to it but I would not trust either completely. Best I've had is 420 miles and it was on fumes.

I always use a bit of caution and fuel well before I need it because why worry unduly?

MY GSA reads 440 range on a brim of the tank, I supposedly am getting 47-51 mpg depending on the speed/motorway/back road etc. After the new fuel strip fitted, reports the same but mpg has improved, and on 30 liters of fuel I am getting approx 320 miles on average before the warning light comes on.

Mine's a 2012 gs tc and when I brim the tank on the centre stand I can get up to 205 mpg on the range readout, but as Bilko said it is how you have been riding the last few miles that count.

It's probably better then Morrisons fuel;)

I put 10 litres of Morrisons finest 95 RON in mine as it was close to empty (I normally use 97 or 99). I got about 300 yards before it stalled. I'm running it low because the bike feels leaden compared to the better octane fuels and I dont want the quality stuff dilutred with paraffin. Who know what its done to the mpg because I didnt notice the trip when I put the stuff in.

205 mpg. Nice.:blast:D

My fuel light comes on at about 170 miles with the computer saying I have 40 miles left. Normally I get about 17 litres in.

On my tc gsa average is 50.4 mpg usually about 330 miles and light comes on, to be honest never noticed any real difference between using 95 or the good stuff.
