My new Project: R65

Hi there Crapaud

Just wondering if you ever managed to finish your 65 project

cheers davey

As I've resurrected the Airhead Weekend, its only fair that I also refresh this thread.:)
This bike was put aside during the last year as I spent all my time on four Repsol Fireblades for me and my two sons. However, I have recently sorted the blades so this bike has returned to the centre of my workshop. I managed to pick up a few interesting bits from a breaker than was closing down. I'm now on my fourth headlight type and I think this one will be more popular.
I obtained much nicer mxbars that are in matching blue. Also got some very nice speedo and tacho that are nicely in keeping with the age of the bike.
The electrics are still the major issue but I will attendto it soon.

For everyone interested, see under National Events that we have the Devon Weekend back.

Spent many hours recently working on this. Swapped over the handlebars and new ones are much better. Mounted the new tacho and speedo to the Honda top yoke and they look like original equipment. The original Honda speedo cable now fits and looks perfect. Swapped over the correct rear shock as I had borrowed the custom built one whilst my KTM one was refurbished.

Today I drove down towards Exeter and found yet another craftsman in shed who is going to make me a custom made to measure seat. It has to line up with the original BMW R65 tank at the front but fit onto the KTM rear subframe. More expense but a decent seat is essential.

The vintage style headlamp fairing suits the bike perfectly and came with a Dakar style mesh guard. Luckily I found a perfect matching headlight unit in my spares so that saved me some money. I just had to machine some brackets to fix the headlight into the fairing. Next job will be to mount the fairing to the top of the forks at the correct height.

Sorry, no pics at the moment as I finished late last night and I'm currently at Exeter airport waiting to fly to Jersey.

Correctly mounted the odessey battery in place.

Sid, I'd be interested to know whereabouts your seat mans shed is ? Need something reshaping and would prefer local; pm would be fine.

Trying to post pics but forgotten how to!
Can't log into my photobucket account.
I have the pics saved on my tablet and managed to attach on Facebook but not here.
Made good progress today.

How else do I upload pics easily on here without photobucket?

Oi, Sid, you could have got those LED's in a straight line. :)

The carbs need cleaning too.

Is the rear spring as close to the battery as it looks? If so will there be a coming together when the suspension is compressed?

OK. Nothing is final yet as it will all be stripped down and rebuilt once I'm happy with location of everything.
Red idiot light was not tightened up as all wiring will be covered with heat shrink in the end. Lights all now line up.

Removed lhs carb and stuck it in sonic cleaner all day. Polished the carb top with fine wet and dry followed by lots of autosol.

Rear shock has adjustable top mount and can be moved back enough to give sufficient clearance.

Appreciate the comments. Hopefully it will be finished and fully tested in time for the party in July. :)

I've made excellent progress in the last week with sorting out the wiring. At first, nothing worked due to corroded connections and bulb fittings. Gradually checked and renewed every wire and connection until finally today everything works reliably.
Electrics were always my weakness but after studying things and working through it all carefully and logically, I feel confident to tackle most jobs.
Engine turns over so next stage is to fit tank and fuel pipes etc and get the motor running.
New seat should be finished next week. Final task will be to have custom 2:1 exhaust made and fitted.

It will be good to see that finished.

At this point I don't know if I'll get down there in July, I have a busy year. First grand child due end March, second daughter getting married end May, moving house to downsize now that all the children are away. We've accepted an offer on our existing house. Now need to find something we like or it will be rental time for a while.
