Here is my accident damaged 1989 R100GS, which I bought last week.

in terms of major parts she needs a new oil coolder, front brake master cylinder and right hand indicator. overall she needs to get a respray, lubrication and cleaning of well everything. Lots of surface rust on the frame...
She came with an Ohlins with adjustable preload and damping :mwink:

My buddy is in Devon this weekend for Christmas, unfortunately I'm in NZ at the moment. Would have liked to attend though ;)

So, this is my first R100Gs, I'm taking it apart and seeing all the differences compared to my old mono. This model was fitted with some kind of emissions control mechanism as there is a whole bunch of blocked off tubes here and there. The bike came without a battery and I must say looking at the cradle that I was quite shocked to see the size of the battery that it does take. Do you guys really use a battery that size or have you changed to something smaller? what other battery and cradle options do I have?

If you get a Hawker PC680, put it in one of these so it looks like a proper job.

Careful where you get it though... they don't all have the brackets for the power socket or the main fuse block on them... how do I know this:augie

here she is with only the forks, engine, gearbox, swingarm and wheels together.

I've had a go with some Autosol on the front alternator cover. will tackle the rest of the motor when I take it out the frame.

hi guys,
can I pull the gearbox out my paralever without taking the swingarm off?

From memory you need to loosen it and move it back a bit else it becomes a real bitch to get out. Besides the fact that you would need to probably undo the shaft flange at gearbox end and take the bevel box off to get the shaft far enough back......you see where I am going with this :blast

Would it not be easier to take all the alu covers off and get them bead blasted?

Better to undo the bolts and draw the swingarm back and then pull the clutch pushrod out the back!

A lot less feckin around for the sake of 4 wee bolts and 2 big pivot pins and the brake retainer

As above, lovely piece of kit...but if budget is tight, then a nicely sanded and painted block of wood to 'wedge' the battery in ( ie fill the gap left ) :)

A Slime compressor in its little black pouch fits perfectly too and is (generally) more useful than a block of wood.

I know the first time I took the gearbox out, I left the swing arm in but removed the engine bolts and shifted the engine forward a bit:blast worked ok but I'm sure its easier to drop the swing arm back.

So it looks like that gearbox breather was open afterall, stuck some black silicone gasket maker in there.

Had a look at cleaning the collector box today. took a steel brush and 320 waterpaper to it. didn't come out to bad and looks 10x better than before
